Hello, I've posted previously, my mini-dachshund Coco has IVDD and has had 3 surgeries, 2 in Nov of last year and the last one Dec 31, 2013. She successfully completed physiotherapy and was doing terrific but re-injured her back Monday night. I took her to the vet who wanted to refer us back to the neurosurgeon but based on several factors surgery is not an option right now. Instead they put her on oral steroids -
13 lbs Prednicare 5 mg every 24 hours Tramadol 25 mg every 8 hours.
She has dramatically improved but this afternoon I noticed blood in her stool. I am waiting to hear back from the vet but wondered if you have advice? I had previously asked about including an antacid and was told that wasn't necessary by the vets here.
Any advice is greatly appreciated - she is 8 years old and weighs 13 lbs.
Regards, Julie

Hi Julie, I'm very sorry to hear Coco has had a relapse. The blood is most probably caused by the steroid. You definitely need to be asking for an antacid and another stomach protector called antepsin. www.netdoctor.co.uk/digestive-health/medicines/antepsin.htmlPlease let us know after you have talked with the vet.

Hi, thank you for the post. The vet was terrific and has prescribed Antepsin 2 times a day 30 minutes before food along with an antiobiotic (metronidazone 200mg, 1/2 tab 2X daily) and Omeprazole caps 10 mg 3/4 of a capsule 1X daily which she said is an additional protection for her digestive system.
The surgeon was very nonchalant about this being a problem back in January when I asked about it but her vet was very concerned and wanted to be very aggressive with treatment to prevent further complications. I knew I had read to be alert for the presence of blood in the stool when taking steroids but was so flustered I couldn't find my way back to the information earlier today.
Thanks again for the support - you provide an invaluable service to us puppy parents.
Regards, Julie

My baby just had a relapse too not even a year later after surgery. I'm so frustrated. He is doing his crate rest right now, but don't give up hope. Surgery is not an option for me again, so i'm hoping one day I can get him a wheel chair. Is your baby able to walk?

Hi Danielle, I'm sorry Oscar is suffering again - it's so hard to watch them go thru this. We are very fortunate that Coco has not lost function in her legs with any of her episodes, but after her surgeries in Nov/Dec of 2013 she did lose a lot of coordination and is very wobbly. I'll keep you both in my prayers in hopes that Oscar gets to run again, with or without a wheelchair.
