Ok so Miley has been doing great she's been back to her normal self. But once again I think she's been over doing it. She's off all pain meds and down to 1/4 2.5mg prednisone daily. Today she is acting down. Not as bouncy. Tail tucked. Shaking a little. Her appetite is still good and she's not crying or anything. I just gave her a dose of GABA and tramadol. Should I up her pred again and crate her for a couple weeks?? Suggestions?? Just want to nip it in the bud before she gets worse again

Hi Tahnee. I am not a vet but if this were me I would definitely give Miley a Tramadol. You don't want your little one in pain.

Tahnee, can you clarify since you last posted.
IF she had a disc problem on 3/25 graduation would have been on May 20. Since she is still on predisone are you making sure she is still on 100% crate rest? How is she overdoing things if on 100% strict rest? The crate rest is to let the disc heal over the course of 8 weeks. The reason to stay in the crate til off of all meds is there is no sure way to know how the swelling in the spinal cord has been resolved or not. Rule of thumb is: pain = swelling = more time on anti-inflammatory, pain meds and Pepcid AC needed.
So let us know why she is still on prednisone. When did she last see her vet? Have you contacted the vet to let him know about the signs of pain you have observed?
Tramadol and gabapentin have short half lives so they will be out of her system in time for a Sat morninig appointment so the vet can observe and diagnose without meds masking things. Let us know what the vet says about prednisone.

We kept her crated for about 6 weeks and she was back to her normal self after tapering all her meds. I just had a baby a little over a week ago and she has been running around and doing things she isn't supposed to. We have just been so busy with the new baby we have been slacking on her care. She is probably due for a vet visit and follow up on her surgery. The vet told us to take her off all pain meds and keep her on 1/4 of 2.5mg prednisone. I guess it's back to the crate for now and back on pain meds. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to see if we should up her pred dose again. Just worried caz she has been up and down on her pred now for 6months, isn't that WAY too long to be on pred??

So sorry to hear that it was not possible to give Miley the full 8 weeks to allow her disc to heal.
Carlo Vitale, DVM, Dipl. ACVD: But what constitutes long-term therapy? More than two months? More than six months? A year? No one really knows, but I would estimate more than three months

So I don't understand ur response. Ur saying yes she's been on pred too long? I also understand that yes she did not get the extra 2 weeks of crate rest. But what's done is done. I was asking for help as to what steps to take now. Didn't realize I was gonna get a guilt trip about not keeping her crated long enough. I can't go back In time now. My baby decided to come a month early so things are crazy around here.

I would say if she still has painful swelling then, she needs to be on prednisone under a vet's care and continue with crate rest for a full 8 weeks from 3/25 so the disc can heal.
Agreed we can't look back and feel guilty. Looking back is only to learn so that in the future we can use that information to help us in decision making. I understand "crazy" with a baby arriving a month early! You do have a full plate with your child and taking care of Miley.
