Baxter Boo's cart should arrive this week. We also ordered him a drag sack (not sure what they are called). He is doing great sleeping with us, no accidents. Last night we watched television and let him sit on the couch with us, he loved that. We are slowly re-introducing him to things after his 10 week crate rest. He is wagging his tail more and more too.

Thank you for the information Paula.
Baxter Boo's cart arrived yesterday. He wasn't too sure about it at first but did start to use it. We worked with him in the cart for a little bit last night and will work with him some more today.

Today after work I put Baxter Boo in his cart and he zipping around in it, he was not too sure about it last night but today he loves it. Will need my husband's help to get video, one because I have no idea how to take video on the camera and second, Baxter Boo loves to stay right at my feet and if I walk away to get a picture he quickly zips to me.

Baxter Boo is doing great with his cart. Hope to have videos posted sometime this weekend. He loves to race out the back door, down the ramp, across the back yard and bark and the big dogs who live behind us.
Our other two dachshunds, Lacey and Bonnie, do not seem bothered by the cart and will play with Baxter Boo when he is in his cart. I was worried Bonnie would bark at it (she barks at everything else) but she hasn't. The cats, on the other hand, are not sure what to think of it.
Baxter Boo went to the vet today. He got a nail trim and check out and the vet says he is doing great and continues to make progress. Best news is he has lost some more weight, he was on a diet with regular exercise when this happened and I was worried with the predisone and no exercise he would gain weight back. But actually he lost and is only 3.4 pounds from the ideal weight the vet wants him at.

Wow, he really is doing great in his cart and is obviously loving every minute of it! Try and take it easy with him for a little longer. I know that's hard when you seeing him loving his freedom again! But he's had even longer in the crate than most. His muscles and stamina need to be slowly built up again. If he shows pain, it would be difficult to tell whether he just has sore muscles from overdoing it or whether it's another disc episode. Here's a schedule that I found really helpful after my Jeremy's crate rest. As you can see, no running is recommended during the second week after graduation. It takes a good month, even after 8 weeks of crate rest, to get them back to more normal schedule. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm

Baxter Boo is doing great, he is slowly working up endurance in his cart. He is also playing with his older sister Lacey, it is so cute to watch them play together again. He is still reluctant to play with his younger sister Bonnie, but she is only a year old and very active. Frequently we put Bonnie in another room and let Baxter Boo out with his sister Lacey so he can relax and enjoy his freedom without worrying about hyper active Bonnie.

My one dog who had back surgery some ten years ago knew his limitations. He could run and chase rabbits after a year of healing, ran like the wind. he was a 18 lb Long Hair, when our other dachshund a 27 lb wire hair wanted to play and tried to play with him - he would come to me and paw my leg to be picked up, he didn't want to play with his big brother, didn't want to rough house . But out in the woods he would lead the pack off leash running all over. He knew his limitations. When we walked on streets when ever we came to a curb I made him stop and sit and I picked him up and lowered him to the street and then continued our walk. In a short time he stopped at each curb on his won and waited to be lowered Or lifted up. They are teachable, very smart dogs.

Thank you everyone. Baxter Boo gets stronger every day. He can now go up the ramp from outside in his cart. As he gains more strength and assurance he is doing better with Bonnie. Bonnie does well with him too, when Baxter has had enough of her, she backs off.

Baxter Boo went on his first official walk today with his cart. He did great. He had been allowed in the backyard with his cart for awhile but today he went on a walk and loved it.

So glad to hear that Baxter Boo is enjoying his cart and has had a walk. I know the wonderful feeling of seeing your beloved dog once again have mobility with the help of a cart. That cart may be just the thing that will get those legs moving again! And meanwhile, he's happy hitting the road again so that's wonderful. Keep up the good work, Shari and Baxter Boo!

Baxter Boo is continuing to make progress but is still not walking, he loves his cart and is now able to go on short walks in his cart. He did not care for the drag bag I bought but then I made some modifications to it and now he loves it. His right back leg is doing much better than his left back leg. He can put weight on the right back leg and will use it.

Shari, what were the modifications to the drag bag you made.... it might be helpful to another member to know. Oh, and which brand did you get?
Thank you for updating us. It lets others see that while Baxter is slowly moving forward with nerve healing he can still enjoy life and be an active member of the family with his wheelchair.
