My dachshund is experiencing the same symptoms. Started Thursday evening. He is on pred, tramadol, muscle relaxant, with aggressive dosages due to his level of pain. We will see Dr. Issacs tomorrow morning and plan to add Gabapentin. However, I am concerned because he has not given any indication in the past 24 hrs he needs to go potty. He is painful when I try to pick him up so I don't want to upset him if it is not needed. He is very house trained and can hold it for long periods of time when it is cold outside. He is eating and drinking but we have lessened his food a bit and he is not as interested in drinking. Should I get him outside to try to potty? Thanks, Michele

Welcome to Dodgerslist Michele! What is your Dachshund's name? Please let your dog know with your utmost confidence that things are going to be ok…because they will. With this disease self education is critical not just so you make sure the right things are being done for the best recovery but for your own emotions. The unknown is simply a scary place. Get ready to fight this disease now and in the future by knowing all things IVDD. There is no better place to start than on our main web page with "Overview: the essentials" and then read all you can as soon as possible. Here's the link www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmYes, please do take him outside at least every 3 to 4 hours during the day and evening and just before you got to bed. They produce less urine at night during sleep. He is in pain, so he isn't acting as he normally would with asking to go potty. If urine sits in his bladder too long it can cause bacteria to develop inviting a urinary tract infection. Holding it too long can also cause him to overflow which damages the bladder tone. If he has lost bladder control please ask Dr Isaac's or his Vet tech to teach you how to express him. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmPlease Carry him this way: What dosages are the Tramadol and Prednisone and how frequently given? What is the name of the muscle relaxant? Methocarbamol? Dr Isaacs is wonderful and one of our advisors here on Dodgerlist. He'll help your lil guy feel better.. Gabapentin works very well with Tramadol and actually helps it to work better. That is a great addition to his pain medications as Dr Isaac's knows.. Is he also taking Pepcid AC to protect his stomach from the side effects of the Prednisone? Healing prayers and hugs..
