I am so lucky to have found you guys! I feel exhausted and need some advise! I love in Va and our beautiful mini doxie that weighs 9 lbs had a recurrence of ivdd 2 weeks ago. We took her to emergency vet that managed her with first incident in July and they did high steroids and crate rest. We brought her home for 4 days but she was starting to get worse with wobbly rear legs and uncontrollable whining. So in she went for surgery on 12/20 after the MRI showed compression of l3,l4. She's been home for 4 days now and she's been switched to a different pain medication because she looks uncomfortable to me and she's yelping when moving. She's one bytril for antibiotic and bupenex for pain .25cc 2x a day. She was on tramadol but that wasn't doing the trick. She does walk 5-8 steps just like she did before surgery but she still seems in pain. Is this normal? Am I just being overbearing? HELP!!
Momma to 2 awesome doxies Stephanie

Dear Stephanie, you are not being overbearing. Your little Nutmeg is in pain and she shouldn't be. Please contact your vet ASAP and advise him of this. Buprenex is given as a shot, but we have seen vets prescribing for home use compounded into a gel to be applied on the inside of the ear flap. It is supposed to be ineffective as an analgesic when swallowed - that is why shots or a transdermal gel. What was the dosage of the Tramadol that she had been on? Tramadol is usually what we see prescribed and is a very good pain medication. The dosage given to Nutmeg may have been too low. Can you give us some detail about your dog? -- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? -- Eating and drinking OK? -- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? -- What directives did the surgeon give for crate rest and for PT? -- If there is pain or neuro diminishment, dogs can benefit greatly with acupuncture or laser light therapy. These therapies can be be started right away to help relieve pain and to also to kick start energy production in nerve cells to sprout. So if this therapy is in your budget, seek out a holistic vet. ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html -- Also water therapy can be performed after the stitches/sutures are removed. Some of these exercises can be done right in the bathtub. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/watertherapy.htmPlease let us know what the vet says after speaking to him.

She was on 25mg tramadol 3x a day but still unreleaved with pain.
The bupenex is oral not gel.
No bed wetting she's able to control bladder she hasn't had any stool since coming home.
She's eating less and drinking but still is. One container of little Cesar's and a few ounces of water.
Urinates outside twice a day.
No vomiting.

She may be constipated, which is common after surgery and while on meds. Pumpkin can help firm up stools OR it can help to loosen stools. The amount of water in the diet makes all the difference. To loosen the stool, add equal parts water to each kibble meal along with a teaspoon of plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day. To firm up the stool, add 1 teaspoon pumpkin to kibble and no extra water 1x a day. Note alternatives for constipation: really ripe mashed fresh pear, just take off the peel off; microwaved and mashed peeled sweet potato.

Ok since I posted in a deperate plea she's gotten better! I've stopped the bupenex and switched back to the tramadol. She's drinking alot of water I think but still no stool. So now that I've gotten her pain under control for the past few days and she's finished the antibiotic I'm going to work on the other issue. She only really eats once a day and it's like 3/4 of a container of wet food so I'm going to try adding some water & pumpkin to her food tonight. Thanks Again for the info! Stephanie

Hi Stephanie!
Most dogs do better being fed twice a day.. Try splitting her normal meal in half for morning and evening feeding times and adding pumpkin and water as Marjorie suggested..
