I have an immediate question if you can help me. My 9 year old doxie was sitting on the floor next to us on the porch and started to lick and bite at his rear foot. Can't find anything in/on it. When he lifts it it starts to shake and jump around like a nerve problem. He is walking on it but we have put him up next to my husband (I carried him). I gave him a dose of benedryl to relax him. Any other suggestions for the rest of the day? Vet tech thinks it may have been a bug bite and to watch him. Anyone had an onset like this? Anything else to watch for?

Hi there, my name is Lisa, what's yours? Welcome to Dodger's List. Your dog could be experiencing neuropathic pain or nerve root signature pain. Both involve spinal disc injury, so please keep him crated and get to your vet asap. Explain the symptoms and ask if it could be neuropathy or nerve root signature pain. Please let us know if your dog is diagnosed with IVDD so that we can further support you. IVDD has two treatment, surgical or conservative. Usually surgery is reserved for acute disc ruptures. Conservative treatment consists of 8 weeks of strict crate rest plus meds. The usual meds given are a steroid or NSAID to control swelling on the spinal cord, a general pain reliever such as Tramadol, and a stomach protectant such as Pepcid AC. In the case of neuropathy, a special nerve pain medication is prescribed - Gabapentin. Here is some quick info: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/index.html We look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, ~Lisa

Hello has the Benedryl helped? I agree with Lisa, you need to get to the vet and have them look at his foot and also do an exam on him to rule out or confirm IVDD.
Please do let us know what the vet says.

He rested for a couple hours (from the benedryl) and ate all his dinner and seems fine. He is not limping, licking or showing any other signs but I am going to restrict his activity the rest of the day. Thank you for your thoughts and wishes. I keep up with Dodgerslist and wanted to make sure of what I was looking for. We are moving across the country next week so am especially grateful Shontie didn't hurt his back. But will remain alert to it. Thanks again.

Good plan to restrict his activity and keep a watch on him. Did you really look at his foot to see if you could see anything? He probably stepped on something or got bitten. Mine have spent several different times in a crate when nothing was wrong. Paranoid.
