Wasn't really sure where to post this. I have a 10 year old dachshund Baxter Boo. In May 2009, he was diagnosed with IVDD and after 8 weeks of crate rest he recovered (lower back area). January 2013, he was once again on crate rest (neck area this time) and after 8 weeks of crate rest he recovered. He has always been overweight but since his last conservative treatment we have begun to get his weight down with restricted managed food and daily walks.
Tonight on his walk, he was favoring his left front paw. I checked his paw and found nothing. Other than licking at his left paw and favoring it, he acts fine. No yelping when I manipulate his paw.
Naturally when every he acts different or walks different, I immediately fear it is his back.
What are some early signs? Can his back problems start with his paw like favoring it or limping?

Yes they can - you need to get him into a crate ASAP. Better safe than sorry when it comes to our IVDD dogs - your Vet can rule out another IVDD episode vs a pulled muscle in his shoulder or something. Read some of the information here about neck discs and let us know how Baxter Boo is progressing. Hopefully a false alarm! Cervical discs www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htm

Thank you for your reply. This morning he is doing much better. No limping. Last night he kept licking one paw pad on his left front foot. We are still keeping him restricted to be safe. But it appears he may have injured his paw pad.
