Hello- I joined the forum earlier this year but have now just written my first post. My mini-dachshund Sprinkles has been paralyzed since April 2012; I shared her story on the older board.
Are there others out there who have wheelie dogs? I wanted to connect with you if possible.
One question I have is in regards to weight-gain. Sprinkles has gained 3 lbs since she went down which I am sure is not good for her. Any suggestions? I've tried to feed her "reduced" food and cut back on her food intake but I think this causes problems with her stomach.

Hello Shellane
My dog Deiter as well went down back in Sept - still working on getting his back legs back but at this point it seems that its going to take some time
Yes 8 weeks of caged rest has put Deiter on the weight gain - plan not a whole lot one can do while there doing cage rest
But I did make him a doggie wheel chair (pvc pipe) and he has gotten used to using it now over the last few weeks
My wife siad he would never used it - but I knew he would he never gives up
Slow to start with short trips and now they getting longer each day - as well now waits until were out side to do his poops and does a pee as well .. as for the weight I currently using a low diet kibble and feed him half a cup in the morning and the other in the evening.
he use to be able to eat as much as he wanted when he wanted but he would wait until we had breakfast and have some - then again when we had supper he been that way since a pup..
So I am keeping the same time frame for eating but at half the amount
and as well every night now we put him in his cage - he goes right to sleep
I too was worried about his extra weight - but using the dog wheel chair has helped him keep a steady weight and the plan is too have him slim and trim again in the future well thats the goal
He happy just to get out and do the dog thing - he was always a happy dog And even though I miss him with 4 legs that work I would miss him even more if he was not in my life or our family's life
Feel free to send a message and be happy to trade emails
Arnold (the Human) Deiter (the dog)
