My beautiful, nervous, cranky dog, Peanut, is doing A LOT better. He will never fully regain the total use of his back legs...we still crate him about 8 hours a day when we are not home, so he gets plenty of rest...but he is feeling pretty good. He does not run as much anymore, but he does play with his ball a little. He is 13 years old, so there is something to be said for his age as a factor. He has been through a very rough time because of his fearfulness and his anxiety. Crating him a lot in a cage was not good! One day, he just FREAKED out about it!!! We got him a new crate that doesn't look like a cage, and he is a little happier about it. He goes in it now...and we take it one day at a time with him.
Dodgerslist gave us so much help with Peanut, although he presented so many problems because of his anxiety and fearfulness. I just had to realize that I knew my dog, and that I would do what was best...and that Dodgerslist would help me as much as they could. Having an anxious dog is a very difficult thing. He just does not respond to things the way other dogs do. His anxiety level is bad, too. He has taken valium (not often because we are not in love with it), and my 24 pound dachsie needs an ENTIRE pill to settle down. He is just a challenge, and always has been.
He is happy and not in pain that we can see. He scratches his back on the floor every now and then...and he plays with his brother now. Two weeks ago, he ran through the yard for about a minute...it made me cry so hard...it had been a long time since he had done that! He doesn't do it often. He still has trouble with steps, so we take him up and down everything. He is not allowed to jump, which frustrates him...but they are the rules!!
The battle did cause him to be a little more fearful of pain. He is a little nippier now than he was...but that is his new normal now...and we have to be careful. He has always been a nipper, so we just have to watch a little more closely.
Thank you, Dodgerslist, for giving me the information I needed to keep my beautiful, precious baby. Peanut is so very special. His life has been hard, but we love every second with our boy!!!! He has a loving foster mommy in Iowa, too, and we all have consulted on his care. She works for Dachshund Rescue North America, and she is an absolute saint!!! She always tells us how special Peanut is...and he is!!!
Thank you everyone for your help and prayers and Reiki sessions and advice! We don't know how much longer we have our boy, but we will take every precious second!!!! Thank you for helping us help him!!!

Hi Ramona, Thank you for all you do to care for Peanut. He is so lucky to have a wonderful home with you because you understand him, and you are lucky also to have him. Not all dogs are happy go lucky.. My Tyler is crabby, but he wags his tail and even plays while he grumbles.. I had to laugh the other day when I saw an anxiety reliever called "Anti Crabby Calming drops!" I said, "Hey, Tyler, they have drops just for you!!" He gave me THAT look. Thanks for checking in with us with the latest news on Peanut. I am glad he is doing well..How wonderful to see him run like that! We carry Tyler up and down steps.. He waits for us to carry him, he knows the rules about stairs and jumping too! Not sure if you read this link before but it has some great tips: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htmBest wishes to you and Peanut!
