thank you, angela and harper........i just got home from having been out to dinner and theo is like his old self, almost.......thrilled to see me when i walked in, trying to jump for joy in his crate, lots of kisses, went outside to potty and he's anxious to get at the places where he knows the chipmunks go, much more perky and alert........he's licking his right front paw a lot though and i think i remember reading somewhere that dogs might be doing this because they have pain somewhere? he doesn't seem to be in pain anywhere when i pick him up or when we were outside........could it be because he is bored? anyway , glad to read that harper is doing equally well........wishing you all the same.........good healthy vibes for a pain free and speedy recovery too!

Hi Nina, I'm Sabrina. I'm so happy Theo is doing well! What a time you have had of it! Licking/chewing can be a sign of nerve pain: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/neuropathy.pdfHere's a wonderful page of info to print and put on your fridge so you know what signs/symptoms to look out for: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/FridgeInfo81907.pdf^ Under "Licking & Chewing": "Your dog starts to lick and chew obsessively any part of its body. This is a sign of a nerve problem that could lead to the dog chewing off its paws, limbs, tails, or worse. Immediately fold a towel length wise several times and secure closed around the neck to keep your dog from reaching his legs and get vet help. Neurontin (gabapentin) is the med that helps with this type of pain. Never leave them unsupervised or without an E-collar." If that sounds like what Theo's doing, don't hesitate to call whoever's on call at your vet. Is Theo still on Gabapentin? ))Hugs!(( - Sabrina

thanx so much, sabrina
i did check this out with dogwood this morning and the tech i talked to said it doesn't sound like a pain issue ......he's not licking his paw obsessively/excessively , just once in a while and is not biting at himself........i think he does it more out of boredom and it's only once in a while but i am certainly keeping an eye on him as will his sitter..........he seems to be so much more like his old self .......and he seems rather resigned to be in the crate.........i do keep moving the crate around the house on the dolly .......and that helps.......
he's still on gabapentin as well as tramadol for another 8 days and then he goes to have the staples out and we'll go from there......
((hugs)) back

9 weeks have passed since Theo first screamed out in pain.........two surgeries later and so much time passing ........and now i am happy to report that Theo finally seems like his old self, albeit a little more sedate.....he has lost three pounds due to our having changed his snacks to raw veggies and slowly changing his kibble to smaller portions of canidae kibble for seniors mixed up with green beans .....both our vet and our surgeon wisely mentioned that he was too pudgy and there would be less stress on his back if he weighed less......he doesn't even try the stairs but waits patiently for one of us to carry him up and down ...and doesn't jump on or off anything........the problem now is me, or i should say could be me if i didn't catch myself and stop worrying about whether or not he'll have another disc issue........the main thing now is that we all enjoy every day as much as possible! so happy holidays everybody........and our message is that whatever happens , to remember that "this too shall pass" and that each moment is precious.......((hugs)) to all
