Hi everyone. Sadly this is our second go around with IVDD. Our first visit with you all was several years ago when our oldest dachshund Sammie went down. She had complete paralysis from her "waist" back and made a full recovery. Of course last week when our littlest baby started to have symptoms that made us question if she was having a similar/different episode we went immediately to the vet on 3/1. Our little Rylee weighs approx. 9 lbs and began having issues with her neck. We were a bit unsure of what was the cause because she has no neuro deficits only extreme pain. I am not super happy with the vet I am using as they wanted to first start her on NSAIDS which from my prior experience with Sammie was not the preferred treatment. I questioned her and she felt steroids should not be the first line of treatment. I deferred to her and Rylee was placed on 12.5 mg of carprofen BID, 62.5 mg-125mg of methocarbamol, 50 mg of gabapentin last Friday. she began vomiting Sunday 3/3 during the night and after a quick check with the vet 10 mg of Pepcid was added. We had another horrible episode where she began screaming in pain in the middle of the night last night and I decided I needed to do some more research, so here I am. After reading your website I made a quick call to the vet and insisted that she be placed on a prednisone regimen. she is currently in her washout period which will last until Friday AM. then they have placed her on 3.5 mg prednisone BID for 5 days and then a taper after that.
[Moderator’s Note. Please do not edit 9lbs carprofen as of 3/1: 12.5mg 2x/day for 4 days 3/5 stop to washout prednisone: as of fri 3/8: 3.5mgs 2x/day for 5 days then 3/13 test taper methocarbamol 125mgs ?x/day gabapentin 50 mgs ?x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs ?x/day]
we have had her on strict crate rest, her pain seems to be managed at this point so we will keep moving forward with the process.

Welcome to Dodgerslist! My name is Pauliana, what is your name? I am so sorry Rylee Anne is having a neck disc episode.. So glad you’ve joined us all. We’ve got valuable information we’ve gleaned from the vets Dodgerslist consults with and our own experiences with IVDD since 2002 to share with you! The problem with a washout at a time like this is there is nothing working on the swelling that is pressing on the spinal cord which is causing the extreme pain.. If two stomach protectors are on board her stomach would be better protected so she could make the switch to Prednisone right away.. She is already on Pepcid AC,, Discuss with your Vet about adding Sucralfate and starting the Prednisone right away.. Sucralfate needs to be given on an empty stomach an hour before Prednisone... Pepcid AC should be given 30 minutes before Prednisone and again 12 hours later and always give Prednisone with a meal.. Neck discs just are more painful and thus an aggressive med approach is typical. Have no patience at all with pain Phone your Vet to have her medications adjusted ASAP. When the pain meds are properly prescribed for your dog's needs then in one hr or less the pain is in control and remains so dose right up to the next dose. If she is still having screaming pain between doses that means the pain medications need to be adjusted right away.. Are all the medications being given twice a day?
