It’s been four weeks since Aimee’s surgery. She is doing very well and is walking good although still wobbly. Is it ok for her to sit on my lap got 10 mins in th evening?

If the surgeon has directed 6 weeks for post op crate rest, which does include the slow, deliberate, supervised PT he wants, then that 6 weeks is for the surgical sites to heal. Kinda risky for dogs who do things in a blink of an eye to be on laps, couches, etc. At the sound of a TV doorbell, something floating past the window, even paralyzed dogs have jumped down. A setback to healing of surgical tissue would make everyone feel awful.
How about thinking how you can be close but protect the surgical sites that are closed to being healed? --- Put the recovery suite on a sturdy coffee table and pull it right up to the couch where you can be close and feel her through the wires? --- How about sitting on the floor where she can not jump down from anything. Put on a harness and leash to prevent her from darting off while you recline together and cuddle on a cushy blanket and pillow. together.
Sounds like Aimee is going to have a good recovery of her nerves with time to bring back a pretty normal gait.

Aimee is now 5 weeks post op and has recovered very well. She is still on strict crate rest for another week. She isn’t on any meds,is eating and drinking well. Bladder and bowel are fine. She’s walking beautifully. She has a weekly physiotherapy appointment where they do the following treatments - Laser Sonar pulses Swimming Underwater treadmill New exercises for the next week to do at home to improve balance and strength. We will continue with the physiotherapy until she is 100% back to normal. We have the go ahead to go on a 5 minute walk from tomorrow.

Amethyst, the surgery was on March 4. 6 weeks post op would be April 15. Did the surgeon want Aimee to have addtional weeks past April 15 for crate rest. Typically, on graduation day there would indeed be a slow gradual introduction back to physical activity. So supervised while out for PT and then back in the suite. In other words the idea is to gradually give more freedom under controlled conditions. Not free reign of the house and yard immediately! LOL Lots of great tips and ideas for handling after crate rest: ttp://www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm Now is the perfect time if you haven't already to make those home modifications so that you can reduce the stress on the spine in the future. No more stairs, ramps up to furniture, or blocking furniture all together. All those ideas and more are in this link: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htm
