I just adopted a beautiful special needs dachshund. Her name is Pixie, she is a short haired red, weighing in at a whopping 4.7 lbs.My name is Jennifer (Jenn). Her previous owner said she was in the other room, and heard her scream.. thinks she fell off something. She was unable to pay for the medical care, and gave her to a rescue group. This group graciously took her in, where she had Surgery in Aug of this year. The surgery was Not successful. So she is now paralyzed. She has had lazer therapy and rehab. She went to foster care in October, and put up for adoption. I found her at the end of November, and became her proud owner on December 5th. I am new to her disabilities, and still learning all that I can. I have been looking for a support group on my area, but unable to find one. She gets along fine in her chair, or drag bag. After some lazer therapy, she started to get some tingling in her legs, which led to her licking and biting them. I have socks on her, and her Neurologist is sending me some Gabapentin 50mg twice a day to help. She is just Perfect for me. I am so lucky to be her mom! I just got her so we are trying to get on some kind of potty schedule, as well as getting some weight on her. She gets along well with my other Dapple Dachshund (Peanut 10yrs young). And she loves to be held.. like all the time. My only concern at this point is her sores on her himd legs from biting. I took her to my Vet today, and he is giving her some silver cream to put on them when I have socks on her.. She is in a diaper, but am i supposed to keep her in one? I have been expressing her so the diaper is dry. And any Suggestions on the sore spots from dragging in the drag bag..? I wrapped another diaper around her legs for extra padding.. seems to work for the moment. She is just so small, and again only weighs 4lbs.. so no fat to help her out. Thank you for letting me in this group. I have already learned a lot!! Any encouraging words would be greatly appreciated. Blessings to all

Welcome to Dodgerslist, Jennifer! Bless you for taking in a sweet special needs Doxie. Pixie is adorable and needs lots of help. She found the right lady to help her.. www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmwww.dodgerslist.com/index/SDUNCANquality.htm Gabapentin works well for many dogs for pain relief as well as nerve pain relief for neuropathy. Keep in communication with your vet on how Pixie responds.. If she continues to bite her legs, the dosage may need to be adjusted or another medication tried. The important thing is to prevent her from biting her legs as the burning pain is so intense some dogs have been known to bite off body parts to ease the pain.. She may need a soft collar available at the Vet or some Pet shops have them if the biting escalates.. Hopefully once the Gabapentin gets into her system the biting will stop.. dodgerslist.com/literature/neuropathy.pdfHere is some info on nutrition to help get her weight back up..she will get there with time and your loving care. dodgerslist.com/literature/nutritionhealing.htmHere are several protective garment ideas that may work for Pixie.. It is better to use an open type protection rather than a drag bag.. so more air gets to her skin.. dodgerslist.com/literature/incontinentdown/Olliecape.pdfusers.cyberport.net/~milnerwm/bumpad1.htmldodgerslist.com/literature/aftercraterest/Buttprotect.htmdodgerslist.com/literature/aftercraterest/scootshirt.htmDiapers are NOT recommended. Dogs abhor being near/in their waste, diapers cause problems with skin. Proper expressing is what keeps a dog dry and the bladder healthy. Skin problems Check the belly and back legs daily for abrasions as you have been doing, Treat with EMT Gel or Neosporin and a self-adherent wrap such as Coban or VetWrap. Keep skin clean of urine and feces. Baby wipes or baby body wash is easy on the skin. If the condition does not improve within 3 days, seems worse or oozes pus, go to your vet as oral antibiotics and perhaps a skin culture might be needed. Marjorie's tip: boil and cool decaf green tea to dampen a washcloth, neutralizes urine on skin and fur to avoid rashes from urine scald + clean fragrance. Since Pixie is staying dry, you are doing a good job of expressing. Glad you are here with us and we look forward to the continuing updates on Pixie!
