State: Tennessee Hospital: University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital Address: 2407 River Drive, Knoxville TN 37996 Cost: $3,737 Date of surgery: Aug. 19, 2015
What was included in cost (MRI?, days stay, ER? PT? meds for home, sling, etc.) MRI, Emergency Hemilaminectomy for severely ruptured disc, 2 days and 2 nights at hospital, meds for home. Wheelchair and therapy will be about $500 more.
Comments: UT has spotty reviews on the Internet, but my experience has so far been positive. Magoo is in the middle of crate rest now. I went to get his stitches out last week, and got a full exam plus toenail clipping for no charge. They have referred us to my vet, Central Veterinary Hospital, for his four-week checkup. He will return to their rehab department when the time comes for his wheelchair.
Courtney Sampson, DVM was the surgeon, assisted by student vets. Magoo went in on Wednesday evening and came home Friday afternoon. I was rushed through discharge because my surgeon was in emergency surgery. I waited a long time for someone to help me, and only got in when I did because I had to be at work. My bladder expression lesson was cut short, but I received a lot of printed material for PT, expression, med schedule, even websites for more information. They are always willing to answer questions when I phone. I feel they would have taken more time with me if I hadn't been rushed.
I can't heap enough praise on Central Veterinary Hospital, 1212 W. Clinch Ave., Knoxville. Dr. Jamie Clanin is knowledgeable, compassionate, and direct. When I originally said I couldn't afford surgery, she instructed me on crate rest for at least an hour. She fully answered every question I had. They gave me an expression lesson free of charge during my first week of bladder panic after surgery. She referred me to the UT Vet Teaching Hospital because they do not do that surgery. Clanin's instruction matches everything I have read on this board to a T.
