Debbi, is this the vet who saw Bailey when she originally started having the first IVDD episode? If so, that vet did diagnose and prescribe the correct course of treatment at that time. They should be able to tell whether there was any pain in her back or neck or whether the pain was limited to her leg. Of course, if you have any concerns or would feel more confident with a second opinion with the surgeon, then by all means do so.
Definitely continue to keep her crated until she improves. Carry her in and out to potty. Don't give her any of the IVDD meds as they would mask any pain that you need to see at this time. If you do see pain or a worsening of her condition, hold off on giving meds until she's seen as that would tie the vet's hands as to what could be given and would also make an examination for pain difficult.
This could very well be a sprain and I'm glad to hear that they think it is but I'm also glad to hear that you're not taking it lightly and will be cautious. Please keep us updated.

Thank you, yes, this is the original Vet. Bailey is doing well, so I'm going to go with its a sprain. The limp seems better, not worse. I'm going to stick with the crate rest until it is full healed, and pray it remains just a sprain/strain. Thank you so much, hopefully the next visit is a well visit, as our year is nearing. Thank you for being there once again, I'm lucky I have you guys to turn to when I panic, I just love this dog so much! Best wishes to all, Debbi

Hello everyone, we are coming up on a year now with Bailey's episode with IVDD. We had that scare but with instant rest, it passed quickly. Bailey is doing amazing, there is very little shaking when she goes potty, and can hold herself up longer when going potty. She's back to chasing the frogs into the water, and still will think nothing of chasing a squirrel. She's in the best shape of her life, we are keeping the weight off. It was a long ride, and we are still on the ride, but so worth the wait, patience, and money. We still continue to protect her, but in Bailey's mind, she's cured. I thought to check in because I came across a vet recommended site for dogs with IVDD, stating these braces were highly recommended. Is this true, should I buy one. I'm not sure if I can post the site, but if able I will provide. As usual thanks for being there. Bailey and I are lifers here
Sorry just read, how you feel about the braces! Should of looked first. It was great to check in though. Thank u

Debbie, it is wonderful to get updates a year out and hear Bailey is doing so well. Keeping her fit, keeping the core muscle strong is a great benefit to the back. Hey, what about a photo for this year's Gallery. Bailey and you are inspiration to those just getting an overwhelming IVDD diagnosis that there is hope. Upload an anniversary picture and a few sentences for the 2016 Dodgerslist Photo Gallery: LOGIN www.dodgerslist.com/gallery/ : username: Dachsie password: dodgerslist14 Or you can email (owner's name, email addy, dog's name + photo caption) to : photogallery@dodgerslist.com
