Hello fellow IVDD graduates and admin! I just thought I'd drop in to give a quick update on Hans progress and let you of new (not so good) developments concerning him. He's doing well walking wise, although his hind end/legs are still pretty weak , something I'm not sure will ever get better; but at least he's walking! The other not so good news is that 3 weeks ago he was officially diagnosed with CCD aka dog dementia and is losing his vision to cataracts. So even though he's doing well with his spinal issues, every day I watch my little man decline into confusion and the many other behaviors that come with CCD. He's had such a tough time since January 28, 2015 withe two back to back episodes of ivdd and emergency abdominal surgery, only to have this cruel disease start after a short time if being healthy back wise; it's almost like having the draw break the camels back. But I'm staying as positive as possible; I'm glad he's still here, and physically healthy; although his bright inquisitive eyes and mind may be failing, he's still puttering around. He even goes through the dog door now, even though it's difficult (we're still trying to find someone to build him a ramp) when he used to be terrified of it! That's an accomplishment, wouldn't you agree?!? I hope that it was okay to post this update that has good and as I've said previously, not so good news. I just thought that it would be good to let any of you be updated on him. I miss talking to you admins, your support was so valuable for me in our time of need! I hope you all are well!

Susi, how nice of you to drop by with an update. I'm sorry to hear Hans is now having some other health issues. Just as you sought out true accurate information to help with disc disease, you will do well by Hans by seeking to learn all you can about dementia to keep his brain active and engaged. This page dogdementia.com/blog/ could be a jumping off point as you further investigate ways to help Hans and help yourself. Vision impairment and dementia can have some needs in common. Such as keeping furniture the same, tactile runways (rug runners) as guides for finding his way about the house. A ramp could be a rather simple thing.... going to the hardware store where they cut down a piece of plywood to your needed dimensions. Your using some tacks to tack down some indoor/outdoor carpet for good traction. See if this page gives you some ideas for your project: dodgerslist.boards.net/thread/867/ramps

Hi Paula,It's good to see a response from you! I found dogdementia.com quite by accident, and that was where I learned that he was showing signs of CCD. I am also a member of a wonderful CCD support group on Facebook. It's another learning curve for me, but I'm getting the hang of it! Thanks for the ramp info. I'll take look at it and hopefully be able make my own little ramps for him for the dog door. I'll continue to post updates as anything new happens, I want keep in contact with all of you! Take care, Love, Susi, Hans, and the rest of the frosty faced gang! PS: I don't remember if I told you that Hans is down 6 lbs, he's a svelte 14 lbs now. It's a big difference from the 20 he weighed 18 months ago!
