Hello, My dog Napoleon was 'pre-diagnosed' with IVDD in November of 2020. We did not do the full MRI due to risks of being a french bulldog, but his xrays did show a potential point of pain in his neck as well as a physical exam. He was on a successful STRICT crate rest for 8 weeks and I am looking for any advice on how to mitigate him from being in pain or worsening his condition again. ☆ 1 How much does your dog weigh? 27 lbsIn November 2020, he was given 30.0 Carprofen 25 mg and Gabapentin 100 mg starting Nov 15th and stopped after 6 weeks. ▪️NSAID date to stop? after 4-6 weeks☆ 2 My dog is Napoleon and he is a French Bulldog, he is 4 years old. I am Victoria. We live in Brooklyn, NY, USA. ☆ 3 below from my vet report - ABNORMAL : Resents manipulation of neck r/o soft tissue injury, IVDD, abnormal vertebrae, other Gr 2 dental dz Recommend strict exercise restriction and pain medications, then 2 week recheck. Discussed possibility of disc disease or abnormal vertebrae because the pet is a Frenchie.☆ 4 What was the date you saw the vet and started 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 for 8 weeks? Nov 15th ☆ 5 No current CONSTANT pain. After his 8 weeks of strict rest, he is able to walk again. We did not do any PT and he has since been able to fully walk and run (with caution). He has unfortunately jumped on and off the couch/bed more times than I would like to admit, but he is getting much better at using the stairs we got him for furniture consistently. If he has an active day (for example, running around with another dog) I can tell he is sore/in pain following. His back legs seem a bit stiffer than I remember. He is more reluctant to run and jump - I cannot tell if this is due to pain or if he is scared to get hurt again. ★ Why Chiropractic is not recommended for pain for an IVDD dog: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/chiropractic.htm☆ 6 He can fully walk, run, jump (We try to limit his jumping to be NONE, but he does get out of our control sometimes).. His back left leg is a bit stiff and walks with a 'gate' to the left from time to time. Worsens after a day of running around/too much activity. ☆ 7 No loss of bladder control. Lifts leg to pee as normal.☆ 8 Eating and drinking OK? Yes, he is and always has been a picky eater. Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? Normal

Welcome Victoria! Since he did recover with rest for 8 weeks and meds, that maybe prooves the Nov 2020 issue was a disc episode rather than the other things that may mimic a disc episode that Frenchies can have. It is good you are looking to be proactive in helping Napoleon avoid another disc episode. IVDD can be an unpredictable disease in that some dogs have only one disc episode their entire lives and other dogs can have multiple episode. So good thing to be aware of what to watch for and to get an over all idea of this disease. Here are my recommendations for getting up to speed on IVDD and living many more happy years ahead with Napoleon: 1) Living with an IVDD dog: dentals, nails, harnesses, back friendly activities, back friendly home, fun things to do together and more: dodgerslist.com/living-with-ivdd-tips2) Shortcut through IVDD: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/If there are any questions you want to chat about specific to Napoleon, we'd love to discuss 'em with you.
