Sammy weighs 19 lbs. He is on prednisone 2x day at 10 am and 10pm, Prednisone started on 8/06/21 and not tapering for another week [date?] tramadol 3X day at 5am, 1pm and 9pm, methocarbanol 2x day at 5am and 5pm, and gabapentin 2x day at 8am and 8pm. He also gets 1/2 Pepsid AC with prednisone at 10pm..
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 19 lbs 15 y.o. prednisone as of 8/6: ?mgs ?x/day for ? days, then a test taper for: _pain / _neuro traMADol ?mg 3x/day gabapentin ?mgs 2x/day needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board w/ Prednisone! When off all meds and no pain, then LIGHT ROM can begin for paralyzed leg ]
★2 Sammy is a 15 year old dachshund. My name is Pam
★3 Two general vets said IVDD. History of cervical surgery 2016, performed twice because of failed first surgery. Back surgery 5/18/2020. Recovered about 90% before waking up one morning and not being able to walk. ★4 Saw vet on 8/06 and a vet for laser therapy on 8/13. Had laser again on 8/16
★5 He hasn’t shown pain. But he has trouble getting comfortable. Cries at night in crate. He lost his brother in March and now suffers anxiety. ★6 Eats and drinks fine. Poop is good. ★7 He cannot walk at all. If he is held up he will try to move his legs. Barely wagging. Vet said he has superficial sensation and DPS. ★8 he cannot sniff and squat but does release urine and poops on his own. He holds until time to go out. I place him on a potty pad in our lanai.
Our big problem is he sleeps all day and cries and fusses all night. I work and this complete lack of sleep is impacting my ability to care for him and also work. Is there anything we can do to help him sleep at night? I bought a stuffed anxiety dog when his brother passed away to try to help him sleep at night and it didn’t work. Nothing seems to work and with all the meds he is on he should be somewhat sedated but he is not. In the crate he is so upset he constantly rocks and struggles to move around. It is a crate with soft sides and a firm cushion. About 3’ x 4’. I’m at my wits end.

Pam, welcome to the Forum. Who lets Sammy out to potty when you are at work? How often is he let out since he is on prednisone that causes thirst. That may give me some ideas for helping him to sleep at night. Would you let us know how many mgs is the dose for each med given: What is the date of the first prednisone taper date? PEPCID AC (famotidine) Dogs don't speak up at first signs of stomach damage like a person would. By the time we notice black or red blood in the stools, things can quickly go from bleeding ulcers to a life threatening perforated stomach. Proactive vets don’t wait til there are red flag signs of: lip licking of nausea, not eating, vomit, diarrhea leading to serious bleeding ulcers, red or black blood in stool due to the extra stomach acids anti-inflammatory drugs cause. Ask if your dog has any health issues to prevent use of Pepcid AC (famotidine)? (doesn’t need it, we wait til there is problem…are NOT answers to your question!) If you get a “no health” issues answer, then go to the grocery store to purchase over the counter Pepcid AC containing one single active ingredient (famotidine). HEALTH ISSUES: Mar Vista Vet reports: "Pepcid AC has a very limited potential for side effects, the reason of release to over-the-counter status. The dose of famotidine may require reduction in patients with liver or kidney disease as these diseases tend to prolong drug activities. There have been some reports of exacerbating heart rhythm problems in patients who already have heart rhythm problems so it may be prudent to choose another means of stomach acid control in heart patients.”
