[Dorthia's Puppy name? IVDD future?] Hi everyone. I don’t really know where to post this so I hope here is ok. We rescued a puppy unexpectedly from a terrible situation. She was being forced to live in a small cat career from 5wks old. She is 8wks now. She is wire-haired Dachshund according to the lady who had her, since she does have the long back. I’m concerned about IVDD in the future. Is there anything I can do to prevent this ? She is maybe 6” long from nose to tail & 3” high she is tiny.

Dorthia, what a wonderful thing you have done to rescue this cute girl from poor circumstances. I'm sure Stella, from above, would approve! The think with IVDD is that normally it is not until the dog reaches age of 4-7 years old and IF, if happened to be born with IVDD, the vet nor the owner won't know until the first signs of pain or neuro loss happen. One in 4 are born with IVDD. So keeping fingers crossed your puppy will not have inherited any genes for IVDD. However backyard breeders, mostly don't pay attention to mother and father genes of possible IVDD and breed carefully. Mostly these folks are in it for the money and not the betterment and love of the breed. So just refresh your self on what to watch for. Being able to crate at once and get to a vet for diagnosis. If a disc episode, then pain meds, stomach protector and the anti-inflammatory drug to get swelliing down. Great little 10min presentation to get an overall picture on IVDD. These and more info on living with an IVDD dog would even be helpful if she is lucky to not be born with IVDD. VACCINATIONS Vaccinate healthy dogs only. Vaccinating an unhealthy animal can exacerbate illness and do harm. Also, immunity may not develop after vaccination because of the dog’s compromised immune system. Is your puppy healthy? Leptospirosis caution in dachshunds Reactions to the leptospirosis vaccine usually take the form of lethargy for a few days and possibly loss of appetite. In some dogs an anaphylactic shock-like reaction may occur shortly after vaccination. Miniature Dachshunds and West Highland White Terriers seem to have slightly increased risk for this type of reaction. Dr. Dodd's considered one of the foremost experts in pet healthcare, Dr. dodds focuses on vaccination protocols/vaccine schedule drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/147595920886/dodds-vaccination-protocol-dogs-2016#.YPYdXC1h0Wo===== A rabies shot should not be given at the same time as any other vaccinations. Also important to note is that small dogs (under 20 lbs.) are generally more prone to adverse reactions to vaccinations. One of the reasons may be that the same dose is given to dogs of all sizes.
