Welcome to Dodgerslist. We are glad you’ve joined us all. We’ve got valuable information we’ve learned from the vets Dodgerslist consults with and our own experiences with IVDD since 2002 to share with you! Learn more about us and how we team up with veterinarians: dodgerslist.com/about-team-dodgerslist/Disc disease is not a death sentence! Struggling with quality of life questions? Re-think things:
What is your name? I am Romy.
It is very early on in Stitch's recovery. There is a lot of healing that can still take place but nerves are slow to heal. Often we must think more in terms of many weeks, many months, or even a year for enough nerve repair to take place before functions would return. One month after my dog Frankie's surgery he was still completely paralyzed with no control of bladder or bowel. It took months, but Frankie regained his ability to walk and bowel and bladder control.
PT for the post-surgery dog can be very helpful. Range of motion and massage therapies can usually be done shortly after surgery. Take a look at some of these at the page below. Please check with the surgeon before trying any of these. dodgerslist.com/2020/05/27/surgery-dog-pt
What helped my dog the most after surgery was water therapy where he walked on an underwater treadmill. I do not think he would have recovered nearly as quickly without it. This therapy can usually be started as soon as the stitches/staples are removed with the surgeon's approval. The buoyancy of the water means that even dogs that cannot stand can receive this type of therapy. If there is a rehab clinic near you that offers this type of therapy, consider trying it. Please check with the surgeon first.
If underwater treadmill therapy is not available there are exercises that can be done in the bathtub or a kiddie pool. We have information about water therapy here:
Are you comfortable expressing Stitch now or do you find wet bedding or leaking when lifted? Expressing is a skill but can be a bit tricky to learn. If you would like a review on expressing take a look at the information here: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/05/bladder-bowel-care/
As you will see on the page above, you can also express for poop. While not as critical for health as bladder expressing, bowel expressing can make life easier for the dog and the pet parent.
Is Stitch able to do a happy tail wag in response to treats or happy talk from you?
It is very scary when our dogs have IVDD. It becomes less so when we learn all we can about the disease. At our MAIN WEBSITE, use the orange SEARCH bar feature to easily access more IVDD information. dodgerslist.com/

Bloat can be a serious thing for dogs. So I do not know if you are using that word with the definition of the stomach filling with food, gas and the potential the stomach could twist and become deadly. pets.webmd.com/dogs/gastric-volvulus-bloat-dogs#1Gas X® and Little Tummies® are products from the grocery store containing Simethicone to relieve mild gas discomfort that babies can get: www.drugs.com/mtm/little-tummys.html What has Stitch been eating? Any change in food? Keep us posted if you make the determination ER is needed right away what the vet said.
