[Original subject line: Bayleigh dx 4-23-2021 ]
My name is Aimee Orr, I live in Lewisburg Ohio. Bayleigh is my 5 year old dachshund. I took her to the emergency vet Dayton Care Center on April 23rd Bayleigh weighs 19 lbs (normally very active). I came home from work on that day and she was sitting, shaking and unable to move her back legs. She was diagnosed with herniated disk. I was told that she does have deep pain sensation, she can hold her tail up when urinating.
She was put on Prednisone 5 mg 2x daily for 7 days, then 1x daily for 7 days then 1x every other day until gone. 28 day supply in total. She is also on Methocarbamol 1/4 tablet of a 500 mg tablet (4 pills) every 8-12 hours. Gabapentin 100 mg capsule give 1-2 every 8-12 hrs. The Gabapentin naves her vomit. Pepcid 1x daily
[Moderator notes. Please not edit 19 lbs 5y.o. prednisone as of 4/23: 5mgs 2x/day for 7 days. 4/30 taper test _pain/_neuro methocarbamol 125 mgs 3x/day gabapentin 100 mgs 3x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs 1x/day]
This morning (4-25-21) when I got up and went to take Bayleigh out of her crate she had thrown up, I took her out to help her potty and her urine was tinged with blood. I have given her boiled chicken, only about a table spoon and she didn’t hold that down very long. I offer water about every 30 minutes. She continues to vomit, it is very dark in color, nothing in her atom so I’m wondering if it is blood. Will be taking to vet because I’m scared to death. I hope I’ve shared needed information and if not I will answer questions needed to help. I just want her to be ok and recover.

Aimee, you have an emergency to get to the vet now asap. 1) Throwing up, not eating normally is likely due to prednisone. For most dogs Pepcid AC alone is enough. When it is not enough then SUCRALFATE is Rx'd Know your stomach protectors: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/06/stomach-protection/ --- Advocate for a 2nd stomach protector that works in a different way. SUCRALFATE. It is an Rx item your vet will prescribe. Learn the timing with food, with Pepcid AC.
PEPCID AC should be close to 10mgs TWICE a day. How many mgs pepcid ac do you give once a day? Why do you say gabapentin makes her vomit?2) URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) Bloody urine is a sign of a UTI. When learning to express, a UTI can happen til you are proficient in expressing the bladder. ---Get another hands on lesson from the vet. ----The vet will likely RX an antibiotic. How often do you express? While on pred and just learning this new skill that could be every 2-3 hrs to keep dry session to session. 3) Alert the vet IF, if you are seeing any signs of pain so he can adjust meds when having to move or nearing next dose of med. ◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy ◻︎ arched back, ears pinned back ◻︎ head held high or nose to the ground ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved ◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ◻︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions ◻︎ not their normal perky interested in life selves + pain from neck disc: ◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily. ◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain ◻︎ holds front or back leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight -------------- when back from vet: Specifically how often do you actually give every 8 hrs or 12 hrs? - methocarbamol 125mgs ? - gabapentin 100 mgs? With your registration, the feature to receive an email alert when a reply is posted can now be set up. Timely communications are needed to give best help for your dog. BLADDER CONTROL? The only way for humans to know if there is bladder control is with the “sniff and pee test.” You are looking for a head level action (nose sniff) to relate to release of urine to prove it is brain directed. Tail or leg movement at potty times are likely a reflex, not brain directed. Leaking on you when lifted, finding urine leaks in bedding is an overflowing bladder where reflexes allow release of urine. Carry outdoors, set them on an old pee spot to sniff. Make sure the sling or your hands are not on the tummy area as that can press on the bladder. See if they will release urine on the old urine area. If urine comes out after sniffing, bladder control is returning. You should continue to do a quick express check to verify there is full voiding until you are certain it is consistently happening. Let us know what you observe.

Bayleigh is taking 10 mg of ▲Pepcid 1x daily in the morning but I will increase it to 2 x daily.
I’m going to take her to the vet.
The emergency veterinarian never showed me how to express her bladder, I was just gently squeezing lower area until urine stopped coming out. I have been doing this [expressing] every hour and a half to two hours.
I gave her prednisone first thing in the morning with plain scrambled eggs to follow I waited 30 minutes and gave her gabapentin and within 10 minutes she threw it up so I guess I just assumed that it was the gabapentin that was making her sick.
She is taking them Methocarbamol 125 mg every eight hours and also taken gabapentin 100 mg every eight hours.
[Moderator notes. Please not edit 19 lbs 5y.o. prednisone as of 4/23: 5mgs 2x/day for 7 days. 4/30 taper test _pain/_neuro methocarbamol 125 mgs 3x/day gabapentin 100 mgs 3x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs ▲2x/day]
She does not yelp when moving or when I am helping her to move and she seems comfortable when she’s laying down in her crate. She has only taken out of the crate to go potty and then goes directly back in.

Aimee, hope you get that hands on top of your hands expressig lesson. Then you will know what the bladder feels like in each stage of emptying. The pressure to use. Where to find the bladder as it gets pretty empty. When you learn these things, you can start to see you can express every 2-3 hours for the duration of prednisone. Pred makes them thirsty. Once off of pred you can move up to 3-4 hrs and as she continues to stay dry move to 6-8 hours.
Let us know what the vet shows you. What meds where adjusted if any and what was added: mgs and how often to give.
Could be gabapentin causes nausea. More often than not it is the prednisone. Not knowing for sure, SUCRAFATE added to Pepcid AC ensures Bayleigh can avoid a bleeding ulcer in her stomach and be able to continue the important anti-inflammatory Prednisone.
