[Original subject line: Foot Protection]
Our dachshund Songs had back surgery for IVDD almost 4 years ago. He made a great record he and regained use of his legs and control of his bladder and bowels. About 9 months ago he started showing signs again. Wobbly when he walked and losing control of his bladder and bowels. We took him back to the doctor who did the surgery and after several visits were told this is his reality and nothing can be done. He can still walk but he mostly drags himself. We were told by the vet not to get a wheelchair if he has any ability to walk. Because he doesn't always walk he has developed some sore so his back feet and legs. We dress them and wrap them in self adhering medical tape to protect them and keep them clean, but this prevents him from walking because he feet are wrapped. We have bought different boots but nothing stays on. How can we protect his feet without preventing him from walking? I want to to walk if he still can! Thank you

Mark, how old is Songs? What date was the surgery? Was any PT such as under water treadmill used to help develop his muscles/stamina, coordinate nerve/muscle communications? The movement of the hip joints and muscles and the changes in pressure on the paws from the underwater treadmill triggers spinal cord communication with the brain. Water bouyancy makes it easier than leg movements against gravity. There is not only the potential to regrow damaged neuronal pathyways but also for neuron to muscle re-education to learn the art of walking again.
There is a discussion on footwear: on the Graduate Board here:https://dodgerslist.boards.net/thread/1564/footwear-harnesses-scooting-garments
When he is "dragging mostly" does that mean he is scooting or walking but dragging just the back paws?
Could you upload a youtube video so we can get a better idea of Songs' walking capability? support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?hl=en
