[Original subject line: Should my dog go paddle boarding with me?]
My dog Gidget had surgery for IVDD sept 2019. Luckily she fully recovered. Now I am wondering if it is okay if I train her to go paddle boarding with me. My concern is if/when she falls off my board. She would have a PFD [personal flotation device] on but would the stress of trying to get out of the water and back onto the board where she can’t stand be too hard on her back or would me helping her out of the water by pulling/lifting on her PFD put too much stress on her back. Or are there good PFD out there that can properly support her back? She’s a little under 35 pounds and looks like a bearded collie (but she’s a complete mix).

Hi! We've never had that question before. I would recommend a call into your neuro who did the surgery to get the best answer that relates specifically to Gidget's back and discs. If you have the time, we would like to hear what the surgeon thinks.

The vet said it should be fine as long as I find a life jacket to support her back as much as possible and help her out of the water.

Thank you for checking back to give the answer. Sounds as if the surgeon is indicating the flotation device will serve to keep the back horizontal to the ground as you lift her up. Supporting both ends, is how the back stays horizontal and less stress on the discs. More on how to lift and carry an IVDD dog: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/20/back-support/
