[Original subject line: Kea was diagnosed with IVDD. No back issue at present.]
☆ 1 currently pain? NO☆ 2 18 lbs. On no meds
[Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 18 lbs 2 y.o. No current disc episode ]
☆ 3 -- No nausea/not eating, no vomit? No problem in this area ☆ 4 Kea is a 2 year old mixed terrier. She looks like a Boston Terrier but has a long body. We adopted her in December of 2020. My name is Sheila ☆ 5 On lumber x-ray she was noted to have narrowed lumber disc spaces L4-5,L5-6,L6-7 likely secondary to chronic degenerative intervertebral disk disease. -- DVM but x-rays were read by a DACVR. ☆ 6 Kea has not had a issue yet. Went to the vet because she at times was hopping on her right rear leg. She does not appear to be in any pain. She was diagnosed with and rt. ectopic ureter [abnormal uretter—continuous or intermittent urinary incontinence (leakage)] and I was trying to find out if she also had orthopedic issues before considering surgery to correct that issue. ☆ 7 Kea has some incontinence due to her ectopic ureter.☆ 8 Kea has no problems walking. I am lookin for advice on how to prevent her from having a issue. I had another dog who had a laminectomy when she was 3. She was able to walk again and lived to be 16. Dodgers List was a godsend at the time of her injury.

Shelia, wonderful to hear one of your other girls had led such good life after disc surgery til age 16. Kea is in good hands to have found a forever home with you. The best thing in regard of suspecting she may have been born with disc disease, is to remind yourself of the actions to take at first signs of pain and/or diminishing neuro functions. -- Crate at once to protect a damaged disc. LEARN MORE-- Get to a vet for confirmation diagnosis and meds. LEARN MORE -- Be informed on the two treatments to aid in decision making LEARN MORE
Could you tell us more about the hopping on right rear leg looked like. What date? --- would appear to skip a beat, then gait would resume normal? --- did not want to bear weight on right rear leg, so kinda hopped to avoid putting much weight right rear? --- other?

Paula, Kea's hopping started just after we adopted her in December. I had her checked out at the Vet because of my experience with Maggie my other dog with IVDD. Her gait does go back to normal after the hopping and she does not appear to be in pain. The vet examined her back and she had no pain during the exam. Luxating patella was a thought but with moderate pressure it does not move. The report regarding the knees stated basically that she might have complete or partial rupture of the rt. and left cranial ligaments but he was not sure because it could be artificial to mild obliquity. I am waiting to hear back about a surgical consult to look at the ectopic uereter and the ortho issues. Have you heard of a young dog with IVDD never having an issue with disc rupture? Thanks Sheila

Sheila, there is no way to prove a dog was born with disc disease. Often if IF a dog were to be born with disc disease, then the first time the vet and the owner know this is with the signs of pain and possibly neuro diminishment. One of my Dachshunds at age one did have disc surgery, but that is very uncommon. With IVDD, discs start prematurely aging by year one. The more typical age for a first disc episode in 4- 7 years in age. Then there are dogs whose x-rays show calcification/minerlizing (hardening of the discs) but never end up having a disc episode during their life. IVDD is a unpredictable disease to be born with.
Not wanting to bear weight on front or back leg is a sign of pain associated with a disc episode.
One of my Dachsies had a dislocated patella, it never got worse he just skipped a beat at times when running. So never needed surgery for it.
Best wishes to hear some good news about Kea re: surgical consult.

Paula, Kea saw the surgeon on April 29th regarding her ectopic ureter and hopping gait. The doctor is not sure why she is hopping. It may be due to her IVDD but clinically she does not exhibit any pain. She suggested we just watch her for any signs of pain. Will watch her and prevent her as best we can from jumping. She is only allowed up on the furniture when we are present and we lift her up and down. She is crated at night and when we are not home. We are hoping to proceed with her ectopic ureter surgery and I will make sure everyone knows about her IVDD as they will keep her in overnight.
