Zoey 4 year old dachshund has 4 bulging or burst discs in her neck and one in her back Zoey cannot move any of her limbs and is in severe pain in her neck area The surgeon could not do surgery because of the amount of inflammation in her neck area he said to bring her back in 2 weeks Zoey had a cat scan but not a Mri She is taking prednisone Pepcid and trazadone We were told prognosis is not good We are not giving up on this girl Whatever it takes we will do to get her better She keeps her head up looking at the ceiling [in PAIN!!!]

Penny, thank you for posting. Glad you made it over to the the Forum. Glad to hear you both understand not giving up. The first order of business is getting full control pain asap. Poor Zoey has NEVER been prescribed any pain meds. Let us know when a vet has been contacted who will help with the pain asap today. Currently there have been NO pain meds prescribed for a VERY, VERY painful disease!!!! Advocate for and expect three (3) pain meds to be Rx'd 3x/day (promptly every 8 hours). —Methocarbamol works on the pain of muscle spasms. — Tramadol is the general pain reliever. — Gabapentin works on nerve pain.
-- NOTE trazodone is NOT a pain reliever. It works for depression and anxiety. Prednisone may take 7-30 days before all painful inflammation is gone. The test to find out would be the tapering (lowering) of pred to assess for pain. So this is why asking this very important information: -- Zoey's weight?
-- Date prednisone was started (was it 2/3?)
-- Dose in mgs and how often you give pred
-- What date will the first taper (lowering) of pred begin? Often a vet will try a 7 or maybe a 14-day course of pred, THEN the taper starts. Please fill us in on this most important information to be able to understand what is going on with Zoey. TIP with mobile phones:

We called the surgeon today to get her some stronger pain meds but he never called us back

You shouldn't have to speak directly to the surgeon in order to have meds adjusted. Any of the vets at the hospital can pull Zoey's medical records and prescribe additional meds. Be persistent until you get pain meds on board this morning so Zoey can rest and heal in comfort. Pain hinders healing and there is no reason for Zoey to be in pain when vets have so many options with meds. If you can't get anywhere with the hospital, have them fax their records to the regular vet ASAP this morning and speak to that vet about getting pain meds on board.
How are you doing expressing Zoey's bladder? I see that you're expressing every two hours. Is she staying dry between expressing or are you finding wet bedding?
Please do fill in the medical list as soon as you can so we have complete information.

Last night we are encountering a new problem with zoey
She was seemingly doing better where are limbs are now able to bend them where before she was so stiff we couldn’t bend her legs
She’s having a virginal mucus discharge which is new , she is spayed
She also was constipated , her mom used to finger to get the feces out
And she had soft stool following that for about a half hour
Today is day 7
About a hour later around her Anus was bleeding not a lot
But it had to be dabbed every so often
😩
She is 18lbs on Tramadol, Pepcid 20 mg
Gab 100 mg 2xs a day
We are waiting on a urine culture to come back today to see if f she has a UTI

Penny,
It is important that Samantha call the family vet NOW and report all the signs of pain. It is unfair that Zoey has been left in pain way too many days.
Please fill in the missing info on the meds. That way we can best help.
-How many mgs is tramadol dose?
-what date did pred start-- was it 2/3?
- how many mgs and how many times a day is pred?
- what is the first taper date of pred?
- An 18 lb dog should be taking Pepcid AC 10 mgs every 12 hours. Please explain what you mean by 20mgs.
For right now tell Samantha to seriously ask the family vet for:
-Tramadol at minimum should be 50 mgs 3x/day for an 18 pound dog.
- Gabapentin should be every 8 hrs 3x/day
- Methocarbamol should be requested also for 3x/day

I forwarded her the info she [Samantha] is calling her vet this morning
The Pepcid is one 20 milligram pill 2 times a day

Penny, it seems the Pepcid AC dose is too high for what we see vets prescribing. Have Samantha confirm mgs with her vet.
18 lbs dog X 0.44mgs famotidine = 7.92mgs famotidine dose
Rounded up to 10mgs every 12 hours. So cut the 20mg tablet in half. Give 1/2 of a 20mg tab every 12 hours.
Penny, do you think you can teach Samantha how to log on to this thread? It would be good to have you both giving us information.

Thankyou!!! She has no UTI SHES EATING AND DRINKING
she seems to be out of pain.
Samantha is calling another vet tomorrow to get her on the muscle relaxer and to see if she can start accupuncture |

The Pepcid dose definitely was to high it gave her terrible diarrhea
We are giving her a teaspoon of pure pumpkin in her meals today
As you can see in the video she’s moving her head without crying and she’s able to chew now where before she could not
Her spirit is good she growled and barked
Baby steps, but she’s coming back!!

Penny, it is wonderful to see Zoey eating....a very good sign.
CAUTION on pumpkin
Give 1 teaspoon of plain pureed canned pumpkin for every 10 pounds of body weight. We do not know how many times a day she gets a meal. So for 18lbs Zoey, you could give
--- 2 teaspoons once a day OR. . .
--- 1 teaspoon twice a day.
--- Let us know which Zoey receives. Giving too much pumpkin can cause constipation.
Would you help us.
We are very dependent on accurate facts to guide us in commenting properly. The med list gives a great deal of valuable information. Without that info we are blindfolded. Please help!
- what date did pred start-- was it 2/3?
- how many mgs and how many times a day was pred on the start date?
- has prednisone changed since the start date in mgs or number of times per day?
- If no prednisone change yet, what is the date there will be a lowering of mgs and frequency (called the taper)?
- would you confirm the Pepcid AC: what is the current dose in mgs and are you giving 2x/day.

Zoey went to see a 4th Vet today [2/11 Karen Johnston, DVM] which I use myself She said from reading the cat scan every disc is zoeys back is bad She believes she has Ivdd and FCEFCE is an abbreviation for “fibrocartilaginous embolus/emboli” (“emboli” is the plural of embolus). Fibrocartilage is connective tissue found primarily in the joints. An embolus is material that travels through the circulation and blocks a blood vessel. Another term for FCE is “fibrocartilaginous embolic myopathy,” with the word “myopathy” describing a problem with the spinal cord. Accordingly, an FCE is the acute death of part of the spinal cord, caused by the embolus of fibrocartilaginous material. The material blocks arteries and/or veins in the spinal cord and may originate in an intervertebral disk or the marrow found within a vertebral body. Penny, good to hear that Zoey is getting stronger even though she can't yet move up in to a stand position.
What is the credentials the vet you use has? Is she a general family DVM vet? Or a specialist neuro DVM, ACVIM (neurology)? A specialist ortho DVM, ACVS? The credentials tell us what degree of knowledge she may have about IVDD and FCE.
FCE:—a poorly understood condition in which some how jelly-like disc material gets into the blood supply and lodges in a blood vessel, causing neurologic signs similar to IVDD. Can be thought of as a spinal cord stroke.
-- FCE is most commonly seen in non-chondrodystrophoid dogs.
-- Doxies (and other short legged breeds) discs degenerate causing the jelly like interior of disc to harden, so they are supposedly not likely to get FCE.
-- Classically are not found to have any spinal pain.
Could you describe if there is any pain at all during the day or night while on two pain meds given 2x/day (tramadol & gabapentin)?
Did you ask what the criteria is for deciding when the Prednisone test for pain taper will start? Prednisone will NOT improve neuro function, that is not its job. Often a vet will take a guess of maybe a 7-day or a 14-day course of prednisone and then start the test for pain taper. No one wants a dog to be a prednisone one bit past the point of all painful swelling in the spinal cord to be resolved. This is a very important question the owner should have answer to.

I'm not sure, Penny, why you are not able to see the questions we need answers for. So here they are again, if you would look over and answer that would help us a lot:

Penny, could you call and ask what are the active ingredients in H71 Spinal Trauma capsule? Sounds like it may be a combo of herbs, which an owner should be know about. Owners should know all their dog's meds.
Did you ask what the criteria is for deciding when the Prednisone test for pain taper will start? important information as an owner to know and understand about the treatments a dog is getting.

Zoey starting to walk on her front legs THERES some knuckling she’s doing really well
Accupuncture 2 xs a week
No back leg movement yet but we are hopeful
She can turn her head now side to side and up and down
