Melanie, welcome to the Dodgerslist Forum, we are very glad you are here. Let's get to the emergency of getting the pain in control addressed first off. #1 your Luna must be inside of a recovery suite (baby play pen, wire crate, wire expen) Limited movement prevents the disc from worsening and allows it to self heal. Have you had her inside of a recovery suite since Sep 17? IF not what date did you get her in a suite? #2 Rimadyl is not a pain reliever. It will take about 7-30 days for Rimadyl to finally get all the inflamed and swollen spinal cord gone. During that time actual pain meds that work in one hour ARE NECESSARY TODAY, asap. Rimadyl should NEVER be used at the same time as steroid Lenisolone (Prednisolone) — a deadly combo. Advocate that any of the pain meds be given 3x/day (every 8 hours). — Methocarbamol works on the pain of muscle spasms. Know this med! —Tramadol is the general pain reliever. Know this med! — Gabapentin works on nerve pain. Know this med! —Get Losec (Omeprazole) acid suppressor back on board asap! There should be no sign of pain from one dose of meds to the next. Have no patience with pain as it does hinder healing. Look for your dog to be acting their normal, perky self when pain is fully under control round the clock. With a dog who can walk, most surgeons would not do surgery. They would want to try the least invasive of conservative treatment. Please confirm that we're on the same page as to conservative care. The hallmark component of conservative treatment is the very STRICT crate rest part (no PT, little movement). With little blood supply discs are much slower to form good scar tissue than it takes a blood rich broken bone to heal. Those weeks of a cast for a broken arm to heal is similar to the recovery suite being a kind of cast for the disc. 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 for 8 weeks provides limited movement to allow good strong scar tissue to form. ▶︎ Super tried and true tips for setting up the recovery suite, the mattress and more! dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/ Knowledge is key! Owner understanding ensures proper conservative treatment principals: ▶︎ 4 phases of healing, what it takes to heal each phase: dodgerslist.com/healing-the-disc/▶︎ Roadmap for your fridge. Stay the course, avoid dangerous detours for the healing disc: dodgerslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Roadmap-for-Fridge.pdf STRICT rest means: ◼︎no laps ◼︎no couches ◼︎no baths ◼︎no sleeping with you ◼︎no chiro therapy WHYs: dodgerslist.com/2020/04/22/chiropractic/ ◼︎no meandering at potty times. ◼︎no PT for conservative dogs during 8 weeks to heal disc ◼︎At home laser or acupuncture for severe neuro damage is best. Transports are always a risk to the disc of too much movement. Vet visits must be weighed risk vs. benefit for dogs with little to mild neuro diminishment. POTTY TIME strictness Carry your dog to and from the recovery suite to the potty place and then allow a very, very few limited footsteps. Using a sling (long winter scarf, ace bandage, belt) will save your back and help to keep a wobbly dog's back aligned and butt from tipping over. A harness and 6 foot (1.83 meters) leash is to control speed and keep footsteps to minimum as you stand in one spot. An ex-pen in the grass is an excellent alternative to minimizing footsteps with the physical and visual to indicate there will be no sniff festing going on! ** Stay strong, be positive and keep the hope up. With proper meds, care and time, Luna can recover under true conservative treatment of time, meds and limited movement.
QUESTIONS
-- Please confirm that we're on the same page as to conservative care. And date you started strict rest. -- Did your vet think the disc was in the neck or the back? -- Do you have a dachshund or is a dutchund a different kind of dog?

Thank you for the valuable information. Luna is a datchund (sausage dog). The vet told me that she must not run around and jump up, but I did not know that she should be on 100% strict crate rest 24/7. I live in Natal, South Africa. The local vet did not specify if the injury is in her neck or back. He only said it might be a disc problem because she has all the symptoms.

Hi, Melanie. Since Luna is still in pain and pain meds are just now hopefully being started and due to the fact that crate rest is only now being started, Rimadyl should not be stopped on 10/8. Pain indicates that there is still swelling pressing on the nerves of the spine and still a need for an anti-inflammatory for a bit longer. So do speak to the vet about that also. Please confirm that Luna is now today on strict crate rest. That needs to be done for a full 8 weeks. Since Luna is still walking, she's a very good candidate for conservative care. We'll be awaiting word from you as to what the vet says after speaking to them this morning about adding pain meds. Luna's pain should be completely under control within one hour of giving the new course of pain meds and should remain completely under control with no sign of pain from one dose of meds to the next. Please also confirm that Losec is now back on board to protect Luna from the side effects of the Rimadyl.
