thank you for sharing the links we have been doing lots of activities together. Scentwork type games ramp training and amber loves her physiotherapy exercises.
Amber went for her post op check yesterday. Good new is that pretty much everything checked came back normal. She has been on steroids for her ears for the last week and we have seen a significant improvement in her walking gait and rear end strength. Everyday she has appeared a little more comfortable than the day before and all strange twitches and movements from her back end have seemed to disappear. Im hoping that remains the same next week when the steroids stop.
Her walking almost seems normal during daytime hours now. Her physiotherapist advises she still has some left leg weakness and hips swing slightly as well as mild ventral thorocumbular flexation (not sure what that means). In the evening she limps a little and initially appeared uncomfortable but That is also improving. May just be down to being fatiuged.
as time goes by pain seems to be reducing. it has taken a little longer than expected but ive got my fingers crossed we for even further improvement in the next few weeks.

Hi Lindsay,
What a positively good news story on Amber! Thanks for sharing.
A little patience goes a long way with disc disease and every dog is different, as are healing times as you will know.
Delighted to hear she is doing well, keep us updated.
kind regards
Mary

thank you! I was just wondering if there is anything i can read on risks of anesthesia in dogs with IVDD. Amber may need anesthesia for an ear flush / possible removal of her ear canal. Im really hoping that last resort is not required.
She had fenstration performed on T13-L5 so im assuming that means they are a little more stable. But im worried about L4-L5 where there is disc material still adhered to her spinal cord and what im assuming is still some compression.

Lindsay, I'm not sure about anesthesia risks, although I have heard about asking for an anethesia that lets them wake up slowly and gradually as it's safer for their back.
Also, if surgery is needed, make sure everyone involved knows Amber is an ivdd dog and her back must be well supported at all times. Write it in red on her chart, talk to the surgical team, and make sure they know her body must always be supported evenly and horizontally.
Sending healing prayers.

Thank you! I really appreciate those tips ill make sure i pass on that information and all the right people know. I really want to make sure her spine is as safe as possible at all times! I make sure I mention to eveyone to support her spine when they pick her up to! So glad ive learnt all these little things!
It definitly reassures me to knowing what to ask for.

Hi Lindsay, Firstly may I say it's great news that Amber is doing so well I can fully understand your concern regarding the anesthetic, my mini Dachshund Mila had a dental recently here in my local vets here in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. She has had two IVDD episodes in the past. I was feeling quite nervous about it, however as Julie said, once the staff are aware that Amber has just recently recovered from an IVDD episode, they will know to support her back fully and carefully, but by all means do remind them when you take her in for the procedure. I do some work in my vets clinic in the grooming area and when Mila was having the dental they allowed me to watch and take some photos, she was really well taken care of. I know you'll still worry but Amber will be fine. kind regards Mary
