Jill, so glad to hear maybe the neuropathy is going away on its own. Sounds like you have a good plan to know if he up at night and doing any licking. It is always good to look up about every med your dog takes. Double P II is a hard one to find much on. Double P II notes from: Chinese Veterinary Herbal Toxicity and Safety: Commonly Seen Toxic Chinese Herbs and Precautions" Double P II is derived from the classical formula Da Huo Luo Dan. Herbs containing aconitine such as Double P II are toxic to the nervous system. Aconitine excites the vagus nerve and central nervous system first, and then leads to successive inhibition, and finally death because of paralysis ... Herbs containing aconitine include Aconite (Chuan Wu), Aconite (Cao Wu), Aconite (Fu Zi ), and Aconite (Xue Shang Yi Zhi Hao). It has been reported that 0.2 mg aconitine per patient by mouth caused toxic reactions in people, and 2-6 mg per patient orally could kill a human. Signs of toxic reaction are tremors and numbness of lips and limbs, excessive salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, anxiety, disorientation, convulsions, dyspnea, paresis or paralysis, fecal or urinary incontinence, arrhythmia, coma and death. ... The most commonly used herbal formulas that contribute to GI upset are Ku Shen Si Wu, Stasis Breaker, and Double P II (modified Da Huo Luo Dan). H. Xie, DVM, PhD, MS. "Commonly Seen Toxic Chinese Herbs and Precautions" TCVM News. Summer 2010. p3. citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.731.1791&rep=rep1&type=pdf last accessed 4/9/18------ Aleda M Cheng, D.V.M., C.V.A Oct 16, 2008: 1. Double P #2 is an herbal formula also known as: Da Huo Luo Dan, and is used for Inter vertebral Disk Disease and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine). It should only be used in the acute phase for about 3 weeks since it can be toxic. It is for severe pain, and is contraindicated in weak animals or pregnancy. I have never used this formula because I always a little bit worried by the toxicity. I would use this very cautiously. www.medhelp.org/posts/Animal-Health---General/Chinese-Herbs-requested-information/show/655412

Sorry been super tired lately and trying to catch up on rest!
I had also done some research on Double P II and he is taking a very low dose based on his weight. I talked with the holistic vet. She said many dogs with similar situations under her care have been using this with positive results. So, unless I see adverse effects I'm going to try it. I guess I'm just for trying whatever may help, but thank you for letting me know it may be toxic!
He went to our primary vet yesterday. We got refills and an ✙x-ray. He is pneumonia free! Yay! Dr. LeBlanc said we could go to 2x day on medication if he stayed calm. So far so good.
He is not a neurologist, but he tested for deep pain. No reaction on his feet or legs. Maybe slight reaction on one side of the anus. Also, maybe slight reaction in one spot on his butt near the top of his tail.
I think his anus has closed a tiny amount from when he came home! Baby steps! He doesnt have anal control, but it isn't wide open!
As of 06/30/20, he weighs 64.7 lbs.
Current medication: - Clavamox 625 mg 2x day ending Sat 7/4 AM - Diazepam 10 mg 2x day can use up to 3x day and up to 15 mg if needed for bladder relaxation and/or sedation. - Trazadone 75 mg 2x day - Tamsulosin 0.4 mg every other day unless flow lessens, then 1x day. - Gabapentin 100 mg as needed, tapered off as of yesterday (from 3x day) was contemplating going to▼2x day and then 1x day. - Double P II 0.5 mg 2x day - Pro-pectalin 2x day
By the way, Publix has some good prices on Diazepam 10 mg, Trazadone 50 mg, Tamsuloson 0.4 mg, and Gabapentin 100 mg right now according to GoodRX. They matched what the goodrx coupon said.
***How long overnight is ok to go between bladder expressions? During the day, we go 4-6 hours max.
***How long overnight is ok to go between flipping sides? During the day, we go 4-6 hours max.
Thanks for listening and helping!

I am very happy to hear that Tex is now pneumonia free.
It is very hard to determine if a dog has DPS. The signs can be very subtle and not all vets can interpret them. Only a specialist (board certified ACVIM or ACVS) can reliably determine the existence of DPS.
Once the pet parent becomes proficient at expressing a dog can sometimes go through the night without being expressed. Dogs produce less urine at night. Probably the best approach is to increase the time between nightime expressing slowly. You can turn Tex at the same time as expressing.

I can't believe it has been so long since I posted. Been busy, but Tex has a wheelchair! He loves being able to follow me again when he is wearing his wheels!

We have been going every 10-12 days for electro-acupuncture and laser therapy.
There is no certified therapist for underwater treadmill in Birmingham. However, Tex absolutely hates water unless he is drinking it so it might put undo stress on him. They had already said it was fine when he was discharged.
I do the physical therapy sent home from Auburn along with some from the vet that does the acupuncture and laser therapies.
No tail wag so far. I do think his feeling has migrated about an inch down his spine though. No fecal or urine control has been regained yet. No movement in his rear legs or tail yet.

It is good to hear that you believe that feeling has migrated down his spine.
It is great to see Tex in his cart. Being able to move around outside is wonderful for him.
There is still healing that can take place. Two months after surgery my dog was just starting to move his legs a little bit. Over time he regained his ability to walk.
