Welcome Tracey, we are glad you have joined us all here on the Forum. Do know the surgery itself causes swelling. When it goes away in about 2 weeks, you'll best be able to see the direction of nerve healing. Nerves are the slowest part of the body to heal, meaning better to think in terms of months rather than days for the body to do that self healing. When you can, do fill us in a bit more so we know where to help: QUESTIONS ❖2 How much does your dog weigh? ❖8 Do you know the name of the disease your surgeon diagnosed? Asking because there are lots of diseases which have appearances like IVDD but is something different. I bet your mind is flooded right now with concerns, questions. Now is the time to jot those things down. Here's a starter list of questions to which you can add some of your concerns to ask your surgeon: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/dischargequestions.htmThis page is good reading by Dr. Isaacs, ACVIM (neurology) as he explains many post-op questions for our IVDD community: meds, crate rest, PT and discharge day. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htmSee if there are any other things you can do to make post-op crate rest go smoother with these very useful tips and ideas: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/CrateRRP.htm and www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies.htmLook forward to hearing when Luna will be discharged and how we may help you with at home care questions.

I remember how shocked and saddened I was when my dog, Frankie became paralyzed overnight. He had surgery that day. It took months, but Frankie regained his ability to walk.
You have every reason to hope.
