Good afternoon! We have 3 dachshunds who are part of our family. Walter, Stanley and Frederick (aka: Freddie). On April 18th,
a day after vaccinations for all of them, we noticed Freddie was not himself and was walking very gingerly. We thought it had something to do with the vaccinations and gave it another day or two before calling our vet. The vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and suggested we restrict his activity on April 22nd. We initially thought things were going to be ok, but Freddie's condition worsened and we took him into the vet for X-rays and bloodwork. Nothing was noticeable at the time of the x-ray but the vet said he would treat Freddie for back pain and, surprisingly, Freddie was
trotting out of the clinic to our car. Medications prescribed were Methacarbomol (500mg), Gabapentin (100mg) and Carpofen (25mg). When we returned home, he began to exhibit signs of IVDD - arched back, wobbly walking, and ultimately, to dragging hind legs.
After waiting 24 hours, we contacted the vet and it was recommended Freddie be taken to an ER for a catscan and possible
surgery on April 24th. The CT scan revealed a herniated disc at L2-L3 on the right side and a large amount of disc material was removed from the spinal cord during surgery by the DVM. Freddie did well and
came home yesterday. His medications are
Capofen (25mg every 12 hrs),
Fentanyl Patch (12ug - to be removed 4/30),
Clavamox (62.5mg/ml every 24 hours),
Gabapentin (50mg/ml every 8-12hrs) and
Entice (30mg/ml every 24 hrs). Freddie
is urinating and has had a bowel movement since coming home and all things look good so far.

1) Discharge instructions say to
start physiotherapy right away and should be done by flexing and extending the hips and knees in a bicycle motion, 3-4 times a day for 5 minutes. We should encourage Freddie to stand and encourage weight shifting. Are there any recommended resources for IVDD Post-Op physical therapy you could share? Freddie's first appointment for PT is May 6th and I'm waiting to hear back from the office for additional guidance.
Freddie
just turned 3 (DOB: 04/06), weighs approximately
16 lbs, and we are restricting his activity in a crate.
Appreciate the help! I found the dodgerslist when all this started and it has been very helpful during a stressful time.
