[Original subject line: Recurrence of back pain]
My name is Fran. My Beagle Murphy is 9 yrs old and weighs 40 lbs. He was diagnosed wth IVDD in Jan 2018. He was on crate rest until Apr 2018 when both back legs became paralyzed. He had surgery in Apr 2018 to remove 2 discs and after 8 weeks recovery he was walking and on no meds. He had one incident of back pain in Dec 2018 and was prescribed 50 mg of tramadol every 12 hrs for ten days. No recurrence of pain until

now. He seems to crate rest be having back spasms and he is unable to sit or lie down until the spasm stops which can take a couple hours. My questions are: Are there any alternatives to pain meds to manage the pain and does crate rest work to relieve pain two years after diagnosis.

Fran, it sounds like Murphy is having another episode. If he can still walk and has bowel/bladder control he is a good candidate for crate rest. He will need 8 weeks of conservative crate rest to heal the affected discs. Murphy needs Tramadol for general pain, gabapentin for nerve pain, methocarbomal for muscle spasms, nsaids or steroids for swelling, and pepcid ac to protect his stomach. Please get in touch with Murphy's vet ASAP and get him medications. Hopefully he'll talk to you over the phone so Murphy can stay safely resting in his crate. At the Dodgers List main website there's a section on conservative crate rest. Please read up as it's much stricter than after surgery. Go to www.dodgerslist.ComSending healing thoughts and prayers.

Fran, have you been to the vet when this new disc episode happed about Feb 7th? Please list out all the meds the vet prescribed so we know how to help.

If you are seeing pain, then it is because the proper combo of pain meds and or the proper dose/frequency. has not yet been figured out. The vet needs to know asap by phone so he is aware of the need to tweak the meds.
Have absolutely no patience with pain. IF the meds were correct there would be no sign of pain nearing the next dose. No pain when having to move at potty time. Your dog MUST have comfort from pain as the anti-inflammatory may take anywhere from 7-30 days to fully get rid of all the inflammation that is so very painful. Let us know what the vet did to adjust the pain meds. -- Methocarbamol 3x/day for the awful muscle spasms -- tramadol as the overall pain reliever 3x/day -- gabapentin for the nerve pain 3x/day
