Carle, I'm sorry to hear this, but so very glad you knew what do to in getting 100% STRICT rest 24/7 started and vet help with meds!
Is pain fully in control with only 2x/day gabapentin? Which do you actually give the tramadol every 8 hrs or every 12 hrs?
The nasty part of this disease is with a degenerating disc a sharp turn, scratching the neck could be the last straw where the disc will bulge or tear. It is so unpredictable. Some dogs have only one disc epiosde while other might have multiples.
Where is the disc this time, another neck disc or one in the back?

Thank you for getting back to me so soon. It’s is same region . Neck same front left paw that gets affected. As soon as I noticed change in posture and reluctance to move put right in cage and called vet and started all meds immediately. It just happened this morning so just gave all meds . He is sleeping quietly in cage.its been a few hours since all meds given. He is no longer tense . Sound asleep. So day one of 8 week recovery...... my heart is broken for my little guy. Vet will visit to house next week and start acupuncture which last time he just slept through or later quietly. Thank you for support. his bowls raised as well which have been raised since last injury.

So chewie has been medication free and fine for a year now.. but yesterday seems to favor the left leg again. Very slight and not all the time .so I put him back in pen. Just Slight limp to it and not all the time. I’m scared to death. Called the vet to come do acupuncture again. Waiting for her response when she can come.he has no signs of pain when I touch him. Not tense.i can rub him and let him and pick him up without any issue. Eating drinking going to the bathroom fine. Am I over reacting??? Do I put him back on prednisone and gabepentin? And do 8 weeks again? he is on no meds and has not been in a year

Welcome back to Dodgerslist, Carie. You have done the very best thing by crating Chewie. It sounds like it could be another IVDD episode. But until we get a specific diagnoses from a vet saying so then we can only treat it as a suspected disc episode until we have a positive diagnoses. Continue to keep Chewie crated until you see the vet and get a diagnosis. Crating is to keep the suspicious disc from suffering increased damage I know it is hard but if it is IVDD, Chewie will need to go through the standard treatment for a suspected disc episode which is a 8 full weeks of strict crate rest and appropriate medication. Neck discs are typically painful and yet Chewie is not showing signs of pain. It is best to have the vet give you a diagnosis before any medication is given. The page here has informaation about things to do for a neck disc. I am putting the link again here for your easy reference. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htm

Vet came Sunday she evaluated chewie and did accpuncture. She could not find anything wrong with him. He stopped favoring the leg the day after I wrote the forum but kept him caged. Vet does not see any reason to keep confining as no sign of disc episode or pain or limp.

Carie, that sounds good. Maybe just do a gradual release back to family activities as you observe him. Hope to hear Chewy is disc episode free far, far into the future and then never!
