Oliver is doing great considering he couldn’t use is rear legs. Or could he have a bowel movement on his own for a couple of months after surgery. He had feeling in his feet so we worked from there! Lots of rest, home exercises, PT for a year, the water treadmill was key in his recovery. Acupuncture, cold laser, a supplement called Chondrocare X which has MSM, Glucosamine, Chondroitin and very important Hyaluronic acid. Quoting here “Hyaluronic acid (HA; conjugate base hyaluronate), also called hyaluronan, is an anionic, nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues” This was prescribed by our Homeopathic vet, it has helped him so much in his recovery. I think it took about 3 months for him to begin walking without support from us and the Help’em up harness! 2 1/2 years later he is walking, playing with his best friend Lucy and we’ve just gone back to our favorite hiking trail in the forest last week! We still go to his PT/acupuncture and cold laser clinic occasionally depending on his condition. He will have spasms in his back when I massage him if he’s done too much. We always worry about his back, there are a couple other discs that “could be a problem.” Yet we don’t want to live in a overprotective bubble with him. He is a super happy, tail always wagging, sweet, loving dog that loves to go for walks, hike, play with Lucy, dig and hunt for critters as most JRTs do!
