Soreness Pearl Pearl is a doxie and has been on the board before with disc issues. Today she seems to be walking fine but seems to be sore. She has a hard time going up her ramp. Trying to get ahead of the situation, I did give her Gabapentin, Novox Carprofen, and Methocarbamol and acid reducer. I’m going to only take her out to bathroom night and tomorrow and keep her quiet. Am I going overboard? Anything else I could do? [Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 14lbs Novox as of 12/7: 25 mgs 1x/day for ? days gabapentin 50mgs 2x/day methocarbamol 125mgs 2x/day famotidine 5mgs 1x/day]

Until you know for sure if it's a disc episode I'd keep her crated.
Have vet check her out ASAP.
Better safe than sorry!

Joellyn, the single most important care at first suspicion of a disc episode is the 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out for a very, very few footsteps at potty time. This is to protect the disc. So as Julie says, keep Peal crated until you have a diagnosis this is not a disc episode. Giving an anti-inflammatory such as Novox can tie the vet's hands on which meds if he does find a diagnosis of a disc episode on Monday. These kinds of drugs stay in the system for 5-7 days. Pain meds stay in the system for 8 hrs. They can be easily timed to fade out by the time of a vet visit. This way the vet does not have symtoms masked making it difficult to make a good diagnosis and the appropriate treatment for that particular disease. Pepcid AC (famotidine) blocks the production of acid. The usual dose of Pepcid AC (famotidine) with a disc episode is 0.44mg mg per pound every 12 hours. Pepcid AC has a very limited potential for side effects. Ask if your dog has any health issues to prevent use of Pepcid AC (famotidine)? (doesn’t need it, we wait til there is problem…are NOT answers to your question!) If you get a “no health” issues answer, then go to the grocery store to purchase over the counter Pepcid AC containing one single active ingredient (famotidine). HEALTH ISSUES: “Mar Vista Vet reports: Pepcid AC has a very limited potential for side effects, the reason of release to over-the-counter status. The dose of famotidine may require reduction in patients with liver or kidney disease as these diseases tend to prolong drug activities. There have been some reports of exacerbating heart rhythm problems in patients who already have heart rhythm problems so it may be prudent to choose another means of stomach acid control in heart patients.” marvistavet.com/famotidine.pmlHow much does Pearl weigh? What is the dose of each med you gave? How often are you giving each?

Pearl weighs 14 pounds. I have her 125 mg of Methocarbamol, 50 mg of Gabepentin, and 25 mg of Novox Carprofen. Carprofen once a day and the other two every 12 hours. 5 mg of anti-acid. I almost positive it’s her back. She did go for a long walk and seemed odd. Then couldn’t go up her ramp. Almost positive it’s her back. I’m keeping her on crate rest the rest of the night and tomorrow, and take her to vet Monday. She has laser treatments left from last episode. She’s comfy now and knocked out.

Joellyn, that should be for a 14lbs dog---- famotidine 5mgs every 12 hrs to provide round the clock acid suppression protection while on Novox.

Pearl continues to do well. The vet has decided to put her on Gabapentin as a daily routine.

Joellyn, what does the vet think is the cause of being sore, having a hard time going up a ramp? Does the vet think it has to do with a disc episode or ????
