Well we are unfortunately back - 3 months after ending crate rest from a horrible IVDD episode over the summer.
I noticed when I came home yesterday that she didn’t roll on her back to give me her belly. I also felt her shiver a little bit. But she was doing downward dog stretches, full body flaps and no neuro deficits.
Counting today as day 1 of crate rest even though she went in last night. Vet visit today confirmed some pain in the back but agreed no neuro deficit. Hoping we caught it early. Eating and drinking fine.
Meds are as follows: Pepcid - 5 mgs 2x per day 1/2 hr before carprofen. Carprofen - 12.5 mgs 2x per day Gabapentin: 50 mgs 2-3x per day (with permission to go up as needed to 100 mgs 3x per day if needed) Tramadol - 25 mgs 3x per day
[Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 13-14 lbs carprofen as of 11/19: 12.5mgs 2x/day for 14 days then 12/3 test stop gabapentin 50mgs 3x/day tramadol 25mgs 3x/day Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day]
In addition, I have methocarbomol and amantidine on hand in case they are needed. She is currently resting comfortably in her crate.

Oh rats!! I'm sorry poor Mimi is having an episode again so soon.
It's great that you caught it so early.
Sending you healing thoughts and prayers.

Jean, I'm with Julie, being tuned into suspicious changes and getting vet help right away really help to keep mild symtoms mild.
For how many days did the vet Rx carprofen for? What does Mimi weigh?
Nice to have a range given for the gabapentin in case. Are you giving 50 mgs at 2x or 3x/day?
Keep us posted and hoping to hear Mimi continues to be in comfort on the current medications.

Right now I am giving 25mgs of gabapentin 3x per day. I wanted to make sure the pain was stopped immediately.
Clearly she is in no pain as I got full bellies this morning and had to keep her on a very short leash for potty - felt her trying to run (not on my watch little dog)!
She also is doing her standard barking and whining when you leave the room with her crate in it.::she only does this when she feels fine.
She weighs about 13-14 lbs. She will be on all the meds for at least two weeks. We are glad that we have seemed to have caught this one early and after the horrible time this summer we are being really cautious.

Jean, great to hear still full pain control
Could you verify if the gabapenin dose is 25mgs or 50mgs as your first post indicated?

I'm glad Mimi is feeling better. They want to get right back to business so we have to be the bad guys. Lol!

Brief update...slowly reducing meds. Vet wants her on carprofen still for a bit.
As of today: Pepcid - 5 mgs 2x per day ▲Carprofen - 12.5 mgs 2x per day ▼Gabapentin - 50 mgs 2x per day ▼Tramadol - 25 mgs 1x per day (weaning down to remove entirely by Sunday.)
[Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 13-14 lbs carprofen as of 11/19: 12.5mgs 2x/day for 14 days
as of 12/3: 12.5mgs 2x/day for ▲7 days, then test stop for revealed pain. gabapentin 50mgs ▼2x/day tramadol 25mgs ▼1x/day til 12/8 stop Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day]
No signs of pain with the medication weaning. Will be on carprofen at least another week.

Good news that Mimi is doing well now that the medication is weaning.
