Dana's Jericho 8/15 conservative
Jericho has had a regression. He did well for almost 4 years! Today is day 7 of him being on crate rest. For some reason my anxiety is much higher this time. I have a lady who runs a dachshund rescue who has helped me out and she has been wonderful. Jericho has wagged his tail again, I think it was day 4, it’s not necessarily often. For the last two nights he has had a dry kennel and goes when I take him outside. He did have some pee today in his crate but I don’t know if that just sometimes happens? It seems like he’s progressing a little slower this time but the doc said he does have reflexes still so that’s a good sign. I think last time at this point he was standing when outside a little better than he is now. Granted he’s almost 13! Any encouragement is welcomed! He still has his personality for sure. I think I’m just struggling with it a little more this time.
[Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 20lbs Previcox as of 8/8: 57mgs 1 x/day for how many days? Then test stop for _pain/ _neuro no GI tract protector Pepcid AC on board! ]

Dana, that was a nice long run before an disc episode. If his can sniff at an old pee spot and then make the decision to mark there/release urine there, that bodes well for even move nerve repair that can happens for the limbs.
Can you bring us up to speed on some things? See at bottom of your post above in pink details we'll need to know about his medications
Strict crate rest as you have been doing will provide Jericho the best opportunity to not further damage his spinal cord and be able with time to heal nerves.
Is he fully out of pain round the clock?
SIGNS OF PAIN: ◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved ◻︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy ◻︎ arched back, ears pinned back ◻︎ head held high or nose to the ground. ◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ◻︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions ◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily. ◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain ◻︎ holds front or back leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight ◻︎ not their normal perky selves

He is on day 9 of 57mg of previcox a day. He doesn’t seem to be in any obvious pain. He’s not eating a ton but also when he gets used to having people food to get him to eat then he is kind of a snob about his dog food. The vet said he still weighs 20 lbs but would also like him to lose about 5. He definitely intentionally pees outside, and asks to go out to pee. He did have a poop accident today because he didn’t go when I took him out. Jericho would also do this though on occasion when he wasn’t paralyzed lol. I think he may have tried to ask and my son didn’t tell me in time, I was in a different room and it was about 15 minutes since we had been out. He certainly was able to try to bury it though and get it away from him afterwards. I think his progression does seem slower this time but he’s also older.

I am glad that Jericho is not showing any signs of pain. IVDD is typically painful and anti-inflammatories, like Previcox, take a while to relieve pain. Pain meds that work quickly are prescribed for dogs showing signs of pain. If you see any signs of pain going forward, please let the vet know right away. For how many days has the Previcox been prescribed? Jericho should be on a stomach protector like Pepcid AC while he is on an anti-inflammatory. All anti-inflammatories cause excess stomach acid which can cause serious stomach damage. Pepcid AC can help prevent this damage. Please ask the vet if Jericho has any health issues to prevent use of Pepcid AC (famotidine)? (doesn’t need it, we wait til there is problem…are NOT answers to your question!) If you get a “no health” issues answer, then go to the grocery store to purchase over the counter Pepcid AC containing one single active ingredient (famotidine). canigivemydog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/can-i-give-my-dog-pepcid-ac-300x300.jpg Doxie weight dogs: 5mg Pepcid AC (famotidin e) every 12 hours. www.1800petmeds.com/Famotidine-prod11171.htmlJericho may be improving more slowly than last time, but since Jericho still has bladder control we know nerve impulses are still passing between the brain and the rear part of the body and Jericho certainly has the potential for more healing.
