Sawyer is my 6 year old (approx.) rescue Bichon. He had surgery for IVDD by a neurologist the same day his back legs became paralyzed. The surgery was May 21, '19 and he spent 3 days in the hospital. He went back for a follow-up 7 days later and has another on July 12. His surgical wound was glued I guess, no stitches or staples and healed really quickly. He stood up and walked on his own exactly 2 weeks after surgery. Since then he is taking short walks without a sling. In his mind he's still lifting his leg on every bush he sees but is actually squatting. He'll occasionally lose his balance while pooping but that hasn't happened often. He's been getting daily pt and I bought him a pool but he's only used it once, doesn't seem to like it but I plan to put him in again today. Sawyer's surgeon was really excited that he was up and walking so soon. I'd like to ask how long it took other pets to walk. He gets his legs crossed sometimes, but he's quickly returning to the happy little guy he was before the disc surgery.

Every dog is different in terms of healing. However, Sawyer sounds like he's doing really well!

Patti, welcome to Dodgerslist!
Julie is right, every dog is an individual, and they all heal at different times, it depends on the severity of the disc herniation, the spine and how involved the surgery is..
It takes two weeks for the surgical swelling to go down, so that is likely why he started walking at two weeks.. Glad he is recovering so well..
