12 weeks conservative treatment
Hi everyone my first 😊Dudley my miniture dachshund age almost 5 went off his legs nearly 12 weeks ago he's been doing great back walking I always use a ginger lead to help support him still a little wobbly at times
yesterday [Oct 5] I thought I would give him some time off all support in a small area he was doing great then had this strange trying to scratch himself then dragged the right leg then it was fine then.he dragged again.. straight back in his crate 😔 he has good days and weak days are there any other exersises I can do with him now apart from the ones I've learnt on this fantastic site ? I feel he needs muscle building I feel glum today many thanks all.

Welcome to Dodgerslist Forum! Don (?}, do I have your name correct? You've done the correct thing to crate at once incase this is a new disc episode. Crating would be to protect the disc from further tearing and then causing damage to the spinal cord.
When the leg dragging was observed yesterday did you observe any signs of pain will: SIGNS OF PAIN ◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved ◻︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy ◻︎ arched back, ears pinned back ◻︎ head held high or nose to the ground. ◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ◻︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions ◻︎ not their normal perky interested in life selves + pain from neck disc: ◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily. ◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain ◻︎ holds front or back leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight
Were you able to get in touch with your vet to get a diagnosis. Diminishment of nerves (sounds like you are describing a new thing of dragging the leg) means something is pushing on the nerves/ pushing on the spinal cord.

For how many weeks when the disc episode happened was Dudley on 100% STRICT rest 24/7, only out of his recovery suite for a very, very few footsteps at potty time? Are you telling us you kept him on rest for 12 whole weeks? A gradual introduction to physical activity over the course of a couple of months is a definite must. You do not want to be confused by temporary muscle pain because of overdoing things VS. new disc episode signs. Here is our page on how to handle many aspects of getting back to family life including furniture blockers, training to use ramps and keeping four paws on the floor: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmTo me a new neuro sign of dragging the legs if he has not been doing that is of great concern. Muscle fatigue would not cause a neuro deficit. Do talk with your vet. Even keep Dudley crated til Monday when you can contact your vet.

I strict crated him for 8 weeks [on Aug 12] and have been doing short walks 3 - 4 times daily plus exersise and massage his legs have looked good today I crate him when I can't watch him he has 2 or 3 sessions of un crated time lasting about 15min daily should he be having more uncrated time now? I will keep a eye on him regarding his right leg that looked as if he dragged it but now I feel could it have been cramp or just stiff ? Seems ok today on our walks and free time thank you Donna and Dudley 🐾🐾

Donna,
Just in case please let Dudley's Vet know about the dragging leg. As Paula said, that is a neuro deficit and something to take seriously.. Even if he isn't doing it right now.. I would crate rest him until the vet checks him..
