[Sept 22 disc episode?] Well Wally had a set back last night. He had been fine all day. Went to let the dogs out and he just sat down at the back door. He had some trembling. Immediately into the crate he went and has been there ever since. Have had him out for bathroom breaks with support under him. He is weak, but everything works...bathroom, tail, etc. Of course this happened on weekend. He is not trembling in crate and can stand. We did give him a Tramadol last night and another today. I am so upset and cannot imagine what happened. But we have 7 doxies and 1 bigger dog so sometimes it is a little chaotic. He does run in the back yard sometimes. I feel like I have missed something...I don’t know. I will be going to vet in morning to see what kind of medication he wants to put him on. I am going to leave Wally at home though. We don’t have any more of the anti inflammatory medicine left. Our little 18 year old Marvin has used it for arthritis. Please say a prayer for him and our little Marvin. Marvin is having kidney and liver issues, but is hanging in there. Rowdy is doing fine except he had a spider crawl on him and I thought he would lose his mind! He is a scaredy-cat! Lol

Hi Roxie,
Sorry to hear about Wallie’s relapse. I’m sure your an expert by now on how to care for him, wishing Wallie a speedy recovery. Thinking of Marvin too.
Take care, Michelle

I am very hopeful he will be ok. I have calmed down. Think I was overwhelmed like my husband because of dealing with little Marvin’s illness. He can walk and everything works, but he is weak. I am supporting his hindquarters when on restroom break. And he is in crate. He is not quivering or trembling. I am going to talk to my vet this morning. Thank you for your kind words. It helps to share with others.

Hi Roxie, Hopefully the vet will be able to shed some light on what may have happened Wally, at least you did the right thing crate resting him immediately and carrying him to potty, just in case it is IVDD. If he does go back on an anti inflammatory don't forget to protect his tummy with some Pepcid AC. Very important. Tummy protection
Please keep us in the loop when you've been to the vet, Kind regards Mary

Yes it sure does help to share and vent at times! IVDD is such a stressful disease for both the pet and the owner. Even once our loved ones have recovered, I feel like you can never fully relax, we are always in prevention mode, and constantly analysing their movements and checking if they are ok, it is exhausting! Even harder for you when you have such a big family of pets, they must keep you very busy. Lucky dogs though having so much love and companionship around them. Good news that Wally still potty’s ok, and sounds to be pain free. Perhaps it’s a mild case? Fingers crossed. Keep us all updated. Michelle

It sounds as though you caught this really early, Roxie, and that's great. Good job on immediately crating. Do speak to the vet ASAP because the sooner you get the anti-inflammatory, pain meds and stomach protection on board, the better.
I would call the vet before you go to the office as the vet may well want to examine Wally before prescribing meds. If so, do crate him securely in the car and pad the crate well with rolled up blankets/towels so he won't be jostled around too much when you stop and turn the car.
We'll be awaiting word after you speak to the vet. Healing prayers for Wally.

I went to vet and he prescribed Wally Vetprofen 25 mg to take twice a day. He wants me to watch him next two days and if he gets worse to bring him in. We have not given him any more pain medication because he does not appear to need it. The vet was comfortable giving him this with my description, but knows I will let him know if anything changes. Wally just seems weak in back legs. I am supporting him when I take him out. And I stilll have the stomach medication from before. He is resting in his crate and was chewing on a nylabone this morning. Thank you all so much for the kind concern.
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 17.4 lbs Vetprofen as of 9/24: 25mgs 2x/day for 7 days Pepcid AC 5mgs??? 2x/day]

Keep us in the loop as you monitor Wally. Good job on immediately crating and checking in with your vet. The anti-inflammatory, Vetprofen, on board can get to work on swelling. Catching things early is always the best!
For how many days is the Vetprofen for? How many mgs of Pepcid AC (famotidine) are you giving every 12 hours?

Paula, he gave 7 days of Vetprofen 25 mg. And I needed to ask you all how much Pepcid he should receive. I cannot remember what we gave him before. Wally weighs 17.4 lbs. He is a bigger boy, not a minature.

STOMACH PROTECTION Dogs don't speak up at first signs of trouble like a person would. By the time we notice black or red blood in the stools, things can quickly go from bleeding ulcers to a life threatening perforated stomach. Ask if your dog has any health issues to prevent use of Pepcid AC (famotidine)? (doesn’t need it, we wait til there is problem…are NOT answers to your question!) If you get a “no health issues” answer, then go to the grocery store to purchase over the counter Pepcid AC containing one single active ingredient (famotidine). canigivemydog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/can-i-give-my-dog-pepcid-ac-300x300.jpgMar Vista Vet reports: Pepcid AC has a very limited potential for side effects, the reason of release to over-the-counter status. The dose of famotidine may require reduction in patients with liver or kidney disease as these diseases tend to prolong drug activities. There have been some reports of exacerbating heart rhythm problems in patients who already have heart rhythm problems so it may be prudent to choose another means of stomach acid control in heart patients. marvistavet.com/famotidine.pmlSince both the stress of changes in routine and Prednisone will cause extra stomach acids, we follow the proactive vets who use Pepcid AC (famotidine) when any anti-inflammatory is in use. Dogs don't speak up like a person would at the first red flag signs the manufacturer warns of in the package insert: nausea, not eating, progressing to vomit, loose stools, bleeding ulcers, bloody diarrhea to life threatening hole in the stomach lining. The usual dose during a disc episode is Pepcid AC (famotidine) for dogs is 0.44mg per pound 30 mins before the anti-inflammatory and thereafter every 12 hours. Give the anti-inflammatory with a meal as added protection. www.1800petmeds.com/Famotidine-prod11171.html

Thank you Paula. Wally is doing so well. We are beginning to wonder if it is a musclar problem? Regardless, he is on crate rest. And I know what I saw Saturday evening. He was hurting. Today, you couldn’t tell anything was wrong with him. He had to be on the leash with support. We are not taking any chances! Will keep you updated. Thank you.

Wally is still doing well. He is showing absolutely no signs of pain and is throwing a fit to,get out of the crate! I am going to call the vet tomorrow to give him an update. We are committed to crate rest. I am puzzled by what happened, but WILL NOT take any chances with his back. We are still walking on a leash with support. Wally is a big strong boy! I need to update the photo because that is Rowdy in the photo.

Wanted to let you know Wally is still doing very well. We have been letting him walk around the kitchen and lay with other dogs when we are with him. Only on leash outside. He seems to be just fine, but we are slowly introducing exercise again. In crate when we are outside or gone. Our Rowdy that had back surgery loves to be in his crate, but Wally not so much. He is happier now that he can be out some. I don’t know what happened, but I do know that the crate rest helped him. And on another note, our little Marvin passed away yesterday morning. He was around 18 years old. Such a good little man. We adopted him years ago from Central Texas Dachshund Rescue. He was a stray and had been hit by a car. A miracle he survived...he only weighed 11 lbs. We miss him. We are very thankful Wally is doing well.

Roxie, my sincere condolences to you...wonderful Marvin found his forever home with your family and enjoyed many years surrounded by love and a caring family.
Hope the very gradual release will continue to show this may not have been a disc episode on 9/22.

Thank you Paula. We are monitoring Wally closely. No unsupervised exercise! And gradual exercise on leash.
