He is still on Tramadol, Gabapetin and Methocarbamol, prilosec and prednisone. Tonight my mom called me when I was out and said his breathing seemed labored. Thought he was gonna pass tonight. I dont know what to do, maybe the medicine for the last three months is taking a toll on his organs. Should I do surgery or stick to crate rest? His bloodwork was good last time it was checked but his age may be an issue. I have an appointment with a neurologist next week. Running out of money and ideas. Please help.
[Moderator's note: please do not edit 8.2 lbs/3.72 kg no crate rest prescribed 7/19? Meloxicam as of 7/19 for 7 days then 7/26 stop to test for √pain/neuro loss as of 8/8: 1x/day for 36 days then stopped on 9/10 Prednisone as of 9/13: 5 mgs 2x/day for 16+ days, BEFORE test-for-pain tapering not crating dog, on bed at night Pain and neuro diminishment observed 8/28 gabapentin 250mg/5ml.: 50mgs (1mL) 3x/day tramadol: 12.5mgs mgs 3x?/day giving as needed Methocarbamol 62.5mgs 3x/day Prilosec 5mgs 1x/day]

Prednisone can cause panting. Try aiming a fan just to the side of Sonny.
I'm sorry you're both having such a hard time.
I'm sure a moderator will get to you soon.
Sending healing thoughts and prayers to you both.

With Sonny's heart problem, you should let the vet know ASAP about his labored breathing. Pain can also cause labored breathing and from what you mentioned previously, Sonny yelps in pain when trying to shift positions. If it's pain that's causing the labored breathing, the dosage of Tramadol can be increased and will only work efficiently if given 3x/day: Tramadol 3 to 5 mg/kg (0.5 to 2.5 mg/lb) every 8 hrs to QID (up to 6 times daily at lower dose) Anecdotal reports include 10 mg/kg QID for more severe pain vasg.org/t_drugs.htm#TRAMThe dosage of Methcarbamol can also be increased: Methocarbamol (Robaxin) Initially, methocarbamol is dosed at 7 to 20 mg per pound (15 to 44 mg/kg) up to three times daily. The dose of methocarbamol should not exceed 150 mg per pound (300 mg/kg) per day. www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/prescription/methocarbamol-robaxin-v Written by: Dr. Dawn Ruben Last Modified: August 11, 2015 If dosages are increased and there is still pain, Amantadine can also be added. Your vet still has many options to get pain completely under control. A neurologist would need to determine whether Sonny is a candidate for surgery with his heart condition. Here is a list of situations when surgery should be considered: When surgery is a consideration • If your dog can't walk OR with STRICT crate rest, neurological functions worsen and are lost (legs and bladder control) • STRICT crate rest is employed and after several attempts to go off of the anti-inflammatory, the pain returns • If 100% STRICT crate rest has been employed and pain medications have been adjusted (dose, frequency, and mix of pain relievers) yet the pain can’t be brought under control • if a dog is experiencing similar signs of neck or back pain, or mild neurological deficits for the 3rd or 4th time, meaning it may be the same disc is involved. Dogs can heal with conservative care but pain must be brought under control. Pain does hinder healing. Prayers for all.

Everyone was wrong this whole time. Sonny did not have IVDD. Sonny had a tumor growing under his spine. My dear baby passed away this morning. I had to euthanize my poor angel today as he was starting to have trouble breathing. I didnt even get a chance to get him a gormet cake and feed him anything he wanted. I was wondering all this time why I was doing everything this website told me to do with him still getting worse. I do ask myself what would have happened if I knew it was a tumor from the beginning. Better quality of life, I suppose. No crate restriction. I am angry, sad, numb, and every horrible emotion.

Oh Jacquelyn, I am so very sorry to hear of this. May dear Sonny Rest In Peace. You did the best you could in a very difficult situation. If only our pets could talk and really tell us what is going on.
Thinking of you.

Jacquelyn my heart sinks to hear this awful news. I’m sorry for the pain you are feeling— it never easy to say goodbye. Celebrate your Sonny's life not the last days nor his passing Take comfort in knowing that many beautiful memories of him will always be in your mind to recall whenever you want to. Sonny was blessed to live over 14 years with a mom devoted to his care and and great love for him. The pain of losing a loved one is great and deserves your attention and time to process. Maybe what Carmen, one of our members, has written about the grieving process will help you, too. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/grief.pdf When tomorrow starts without me And I'm not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes All filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn't cry The way you did today, While thinking of the many things We didn't get to say. When tomorrow starts without me..
don't think we're far apart,
for every time you think of me..
I'm right here in your heart.
~David M. Romano May all the years of memories soon become sweet ones for you. Warmest of ((hugs)) and sincere condolences, Jacquelyn.
