Hello. I'm Sabrina & my pup is Spike. He is an 11 lb 2 1/2 year old chiweenie. He was chasing his puppy sister on Memorial Day & we believe he slipped on our rocks outside & twisted his back & ruptured a disc. He immediately showed signs of paralysis [5/28]. We took him to the vet the following day & he was sent home on Tramadol, Prednisone & Methocarbamol with strict crate rest.
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 11 lbs Post op meds? ]
He was not pooping, so on Saturday, June 2, I dropped him off at the vet to help him go. The vet tech called me reprimanding me about his quality of life and telling me that I must not understand the situation (well it was not explained to me that he may not get better) and advised me to go to the emergency specialty vet. I had a short time to figure out how to get the money to cover the surgery & started to panic. I took him in & got an estimate. Luckily at this time he still had deep pain response. I got the money on Monday June 4th & he went in for surgery. The surgery was a success & he stayed in the hospital for 4 days. We brought him home on Friday June 8th. Since then he has been getting better every day. He has been on strict rest since then. We keep him in a laundry basket when we are home & we can watch him closely & in his crate when we go to work. We are doing some PT exercises 2+ times a day & I am seeing his muscle mass coming back in his legs. He is standing alone for up to 7 minutes at a time. He does not fix his paws when they are flipped though. I see him getting himself up to stand when he gets excited & trying to walk. He is starting PT at the get this Friday July 13. We are still very hopeful for a full recovery.

Sabrina, welcome! Already trying with back legs to move up in to a stand bodes well for even more nerve healing to happen with time. What meds was he sent home on if any? Exact name, dose in mgs? how often? Laundry baskets are well known to be a danger to a healing dog. You can convert your wire crate to a top opening one if that helps. But please do not use the laundry basket. Dogs always do the unexpected in a blink of eye. The security of the crate prevents any unexpected dangers to the tissue healing post op. How to convert your crate: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies/cratetopconvert.pdfFor how many weeks did the surgeon want for post op crate rest- which includes all the PT he is directing-- some want 4 weeks and for other dogs 6 weeks are needed? I recommend you reply to a post by going to the "Quick reply" typing area and NOT clicking the "Reply" link.
Quick reply allows you to scroll up and down to a previous post and then back down to the "Quick Reply" typing area to continue your own post.
A laptop, a tablet are, of course, much easier to deal with typing etc. if you have access to one.
